PIONEER BARTON FAMILY


1. THOMAS PETER BARTON, my oldest known ancestor was born 3 July 1805 in Dutchess Co., NY, died 7 Dec 1870 in Erie Co., PA. I have been unable to find out who Thomas's parents were. In the book "The Calkins Family Manuscript" by Mrs. Turney Sharps, it stated that Thomas was born in Dutchess Co., NY in 1805 and was also married there in 1826. Family bible records which came to light a few years ago state that Thomas was married 28 Apr 1825 in Oswego Co., NY to RHODA N. CALKINS. Both THOMAS PETER and RHODA N. Calkins BARTON were buried at Phillipsville Cemetery in Erie Co., PA. The dates on the headstone support their birth and death dates. I also have obituaries for Thomas and Rhoda from the Erie Morning Dispatch, Erie Co., PA.

Thomas and Rhoda are found listed on the 1830 Census of Jefferson Co., NY. Further research at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah has not revealed any paper trail for them in Jefferson or Oswego Co., NY. Rhoda had most of her family living in the Jefferson/Oswego County area at that time.

Thomas and Rhoda are next found listed on the 1840 and 1850 Census of Trenton Villiage, Oneida Co., NY where the remainder of their children were born. One child , Lewis King BARTON died there 3 Oct 1841. There are some deed records on Thomas in Onieda County.

Thomas and Rhoda then migrated to Green Twp., Erie Co., PA before 1860 and settled there. Many of Rhoda's siblings lived there then moved on to Michigan or Wisconsin.

He married 28 Apr 1825 in Richland, Oswego Co., NY

RHODA N. CALKINS b. 12 Sep 1809 in Coburg, Ontario, Canada, d. 29 Jul 1880 in Erie Co., PA. daughter of SALMON CALKINS and EUNICE RICHARDSON.

8 vii SARAH MAHALIE BARTON b. 3 Oct 1838 in Trenton, Oneida Co., NY, md. CHARLES NEWSHAM. CHARLES and SARAH were said to have migrated to California. SARAH was found in the 1920 Census of Douglas Co., MN, age 81, in the home of BYRON E. and MAY M. HOWE. She was listed as mother-in-law.

9 viii HELEN SOPHIA BARTON b. 29 Mar 1840 in Trenton, Oneida Co., NY. No further record.

3)Cora Della b. 12 Aug 1875 in Fayette Co., OH, d. in MO, md. Albert Patrick OLSEN. Children of Albert and Cora were: Goldie Irene and Dorothy May.

**4) (my line) Harry Wintersmith b. 1 Apr 1878 in Fayette Co., md. 1) Mary Ellen BLATT. Married 2)Alma June COOK b. 14 Jun 1901 in Carroll Co., AR, d. 18 Feb 1937 in McDonald Co., MO and is buried in Howard Cemetery in the same county. She was the daughter of Lafayette COOK and Rutha Jane BAILEY. Children of Harry and Mary Ellen BLATT were: Carl Marshall, and Sylvia. Children of Harry and Alma June COOK were: ** (my line) Curtis Eldon, Pauline Louise, Mayta Margaret, Dorothy Lucille, and Robert Howard.

**Curtis Eldon BARTON was my father and the 1st child of Harry and Alma BARTON. He was born 5 Feb 1918 in Rolla, Phelps Co., MO, d. 18 Aug 1977 in Fort Worth, Tarrant Co., TX. He married 1) Geraldine LAWLER. Their children were my brothers Ronald Wayne and Eldon Ray. He married 2) Geraldine THOMPSON (my mom) and their children were Kathy, Lou and Donna (me).

3. WILLIAM MORRIS BARTON was born 2 May 1827 in Brownville, Jefferson Co., NY. He died 9 Sep 1900 in Erie Co., PA.

He marriedd. 2 May 1848 in NY/PA

ARVILLA PUTNEY who was born 22 Oct 1826 in Brown Co., NY, daughter of Daniel PUTNEY and Mary HEATH. She died 29 Oct 1900 in Erie Co., PA. Both are buried in Lakeside Cemetery, Erie Co., PA. This family stayed in Erie Co., PA.

10. THOMAS PETER BARTON, son of THOMAS PETER BARTON & RHODA N. CALKINS, was born 9 Sep 1843 in Trenton, Oneida Co., NY, and died 11 Jun 1892 in Erie Co., PA. Thomas and Carrie are buried in Erie Cemetery, Erie Co., PA.

CAROLINE (Carrie) E. BRACE, daughter of Nathaniel BRACE and Elizabeth LAWRENCE, born 23 May 1849 in Erie Co., PA. She died 5 Jul 1924 in Erie Co., PA. Thomas and Carrrie stayed in Erie Co., PA.

11. JULIA ESTRELLA BARTON daughter of THOMAS PETER BARTON & RHODA N. CALKINS, was born 13 Jun 1845 in Trenton, Oneida Co., NY, and died 14 Aug 1928.

She married

JACOB RIPLEY, son of DAVID RIPLEY and ANNA NANCY FREY who was born 10 Jul 1838 in Erie Co., PA, and died 1 Jan 1862 in Erie Co., PA. JACOB is buried in the Erie Cemetery, Erie Co., PA.

12. FRANKLIN HENRY P. BARTON, son of THOMAS PETER BARTON & RHODA N. CALKINS, was born 30 Sep 1847 in Trenton, Oneida Co., NY. He was my gg grandfather and 11th child of THOMAS PETER BARTON and RHODA N. CALKINS. HENRY enlisted in the Civil War in Company K, 11th Michigan Infantry. Unfortunately the person who was in charge of signing HENRY up told him and others that they could have a furlough to go home and see their families before reporting for duty. HENRY and these men later found out this was not true and many left to go see their families anyway. This resulted in a Court Marshall for HENRY but upon having his trial, the truth came out and all charges were dropped against him. He never made it home to see his family until after he was discharged. Why he was in Wisconsin when he married Louvisa CLINGENSMITH is unknown to me. He and Louvisa made it back to Erie Co., PA and had their first child there then to Guthrie Co., Iowa where their second child was born. They then migrated to Fayette Co., Ohio where the last two children were born. They eventually migrated to McDonald Co., Missouri where the family set up house and it was also where Louvisa died. HENRY went to Los Angeles Co., California and re-married to Tennie BISSET and lived his life out there.

He died 24 Jul 1940 in Los Angeles Co., CA, and was buried Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Los Angeles, CA.

He married (1) 10 Oct 1868 in Sauk Co., WI

LOUVISA CLINGENSMITH, daughter of Philip CLINGENSMITH and Pleasy WOODS, who was born 1846 in Morgan Co., OH, and died. 9 Nov 1920 in Newton Co., Missouri, buried in Howard Cemetery, McDonald Co., Missouri. HENRY and LOUVISA migrated to Fayette Co., Ohio, Guthrie Co., Iowa, McDonald Co., Missouri where Louvisa died, then finally to Los Angeles Co., CA where HENRY died.
