1. ELIJAH BUTTERFIELD (son of NATHANIEL and ESTHER (STEWART) BUTTERFIELD) was born 1793
at Kingsbury, Washington County, NY. Elijah served in the War of 1812 with
Captain Asa Grant's Co. 13 Reg't New York Detached Militia and
Captain Nicholas Campbell's Co., 121 Reg't New York Militia. He is said to
have been in the battle at Sackett's Harbor. Extractions from an indenture
made 19 February 1836 in Jefferson Co., NY, it shows that he died while his
children were still minors, and that his wife remarried.
The legal document reads, in part:
"STEPHEN SEAMANS* of Alexandria, Jefferson, NY guardian of BETSEY, STEPHEN S.,
NATHANIEL, and ELIJAH S. BUTTERFIELD infant children and heirs at law of
ELIJAH B DEXTER CUSHING and POLLY CUSHING, his wife, the said POLLY CUSHING
being the widow of the said ELIJAH BUTTERFIELD deceased of the same place of
the first part...
"ELIJAH BUTTERFIELD deceased at the time of his death was seized in fee of all
the piece of land in the town of Alexandria, Jefferson, NY....
(detailed description) ".... application was made to the
HONORABLE HIRAM DENIS Chancellor of the 5th Circuit
for the sale of the said premises ....
" ELIJAH died 10 Feb. 1827 in Theresa, Jefferson, NY and is buried in the
Town of Alexandria.
*Stephen Seamans (Simmons) was an uncle of the orphaned children.
He was married to Elizabeth Butterfield who was a sister of ELIJAH'S father
Nathaniel.
ELIJAH BUTTERFIELD married about 1815
MARY "POLLY" WEBSTER. According to family lore she is a cousin of
Noah Webster but no proof of her parentage or connection to Noah has been
found in my research. After Elijah's death Mary remarried to Dexter Cushing.
She died sometime between 1836 -1840 in Vermilion Co., IL.
