JEFFERSON COUNTY NEW YORK CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS' BIOGRAPHIES

Bruce Cough

Union Soldier - Distinguished Service

Carol Bruce Kemery, CBCL60@aol.com, has sent us the Civil War record of Bruce Cough. She writes: For many years I have been searching for Bruce Cough's Civil War records. After receiving them from the National Archives, I realized that the LDS records I had previously obtained were incorrect.

Bruce was born to Jeremiah Cough and Mary Ellen Brewster in 1835, in Lyme, New York, from the Mayflower Brewster. Bruce's military records list him as 5' 6 3/4 inches tall with sandy hair and blue eyes. Bruce never married. At age 27, Bruce enlisted in the Union Army on January 2, 1862 for three years. He mustered in to Co. G, 94th Inf. Reg. based in Sacketts Harbor on Feb. 13, 1862. He remained with his Co. until July 23 of 1862 when he was listed as sent to the hospital at Alexandria, Virginia because of chronic diarrhea. He was returned to duty September 15, 1862 to Fort Hamilton, New York. Then on October 30 he was returned to a hospital. He was then transferred to Portsmouth Military Hospital in Rhode Island. Soon his condition worsened and he died on Dec. 5, 1862. He was buried next day in the hospital's cemetery.
