Horace D. Ivory

Union Soldier - Distinguished Service

Horace D. Ivory was born in Smithville, Jefferson County NY, and at the age of 19 years he enlisted in Co. L of the NY Heavy Artillery on August 6, 1862 for a period of 3 years. He was mustered in 27 December the same year as a private. On July 6, 1862 he was appointed Artificer.

He was killed in action July 6, 1864 near Petersburg, Va. He was buried at Fort Stedman , which is a part of the Petersburg battlefield. His gravestone, # 1290, is located in the Petersburg National Cemetery, Petersburg, VA.

He had been a blacksmith. He was described as 5 feet, 10 1/2 inches tall, black eyes, black hair, and dark complexion. He evidently joined up with the consent of his parents. He and his first cousin, Theodore H. Ivory, were first cousins, born and raised in Henderson Township.
