JOHN JOLLY

Union Soldier - Distinguished Service

John Jolly was born in May 21, 1833 and enlisted for one year in the 35th New York Volunteer Infantry, Company C, at Theresa, NY., October 3, 1861. He re-enlisted for another term. He was elevated to rank of Coporal. When he was returning home from duty, May 22, 1863, on the train; stretch from Washington to Elmira; he climbed on top of the car they were riding in to escape the heat and was hit by a bridge support. John died instantly. He was 30 years, 1 day old. Burial was in Evans Mills Cemetery.

To the Editor of the Utica Morning Herald:

35th Regiment
New York Volunteer Infantry
A SOLDIER KILLED-Corporal John Jolly of Company C, (the Theresa Company) was killed on his way home from Washington to Elmira, by standing on top of the car while it was passing under a bridge. He was killed instantly. The reason for getting on top of the car was to escape the great heat inside. The body was recovered, and forwarded home.

The deceased was a fine man, a good soldier, and bore a good reputation with all that knew him.
