Benjamin C. Near

Union Soldier - Distinguished Service

Benjamin C. Near was born in 1814 and at the age of 47 he enlisted in the 24th N. Y. Volunteer Infantry, Company G on August 26, 1861 and was honorably discharged November 9, 1861. He joined the 94th N. Y. Volunteer Infantry, Company H on February 10, 1862 at Hounsfield and was honorably discharged on July 31, 1865.

Sandy Creek

Nov. 22.--Benjamin C. Near, aged 79 years, died Tuesday and was buried by Post Barney Thursday, Rev. M. G. Seymour officiating. Mr. Near was drummer in the 94th N. Y. Vols during the war, accompanied by his son Benjamin. He was always a very enthusiastic man with martial music on any patriotic occasion and to the last kept his relations prime with the G. A. R. post, earnestly desiring to be buried by them. A large number of veterans attended. The day was balmy for the season of the year.
