PIONEER FAILING FAMILY

1. JOHN DIETERICH FAILING, (son of JOHAN DIETERICH and ANNA EVE (ZIMMERMAN) FAILING) was born 14 Sep 1753 in St. Johnsville, Montgomery County NY. He served in the Revolutionary War between 1775 and 1783 in Tryon Co, NY (age 22). His unit was House's Company, Col. Jacob G. Klock's 2d Regiment, Tryon County Militia. His three brothers served in the same company. He was captured by Tories and Indians on 28 Aug 1781. Several houses and barns were destroyed that day, including his father's. Held prisoner at Block Island, he was released after about two years, and reached home 4 Sep 1783. His pension file (W19242) gives a day by day account of his service much of which was for brief periods spaced over 1775-1781 prior to his capture. His service record allows 21 months, 7 days of service, which means most of his time as prisoner was not counted. He removed with his wife, and with the family of his son John J. to Town of Pamelia, Jefferson County about 1835 (age 82). He died 27 May 1838 in Town of Pamelia and was buried in the Parish Cemetery there.
