1. LOUIS-ELIE GAULIN (GOLER) (son of JOSEPH and MARIE ANNE (LEROUX DIT
CARDINAL) GAULIN) was born 1796 in Quebec, Canada. In March 1821 he
immigrated to the Town of Lyme, Jefferson County, at age 25. He was
naturalized at age 38 in Lyme on 4 Sep 1834. He died at age 65 in Cape
Vincent, Jefferson County.
Explanation of spelling of name: sometimes spelled Golan, which is
phonetic spelling of his name: Gaulin. Later records replaced the final
letter "n" with an "r" and thus was born the name known locally as Goler.
Although he and his family were known by the name Goler, the church
continued to use the original spelling: he was born Louis-Elie Gaulin and
he had a son baptized as Lewis Elias Gaulin in Jan 1823, but who later was
Lewis E. Goler, like his father. His daughter, my great-grandmother, was
Marie Gaulin in the church but Mary Goler locally.
He married 13 Oct 1818 in Kingston, ON, Canada at age 22,
