WATKINS

Barb Rowbotham 07 Apr 1998 12:27:07
Hi! I am researching my great great grandfather, Reverend Nathaniel Watkins reportedly born about 1806 in Wales. The good Reverend must have kept traveling "to where the need was greatest" because he's certainly sent me on some trail!
The latest clue I have on him was an index listing for the 1840 census in Ellisburg, Jefferson Co., and I was so excited to see this because it would seem a likely stop between where I have him in 1832 (in Albany, NY) and where I have him in 1844 (near Kingston, Ontario). I am desperately trying to find a U.S. census for him, since he had a daughter that reportedly returned to New York after she first moved to Canada with the family, but I haven't even a name for her, let alone a birth date. What I would really appreciate from you or someone you can turn me to, is a verification that this index listing is really my Nathaniel and a place or name where I can send away for a copy of it, if this is possible. Does anyone there do verifications of this kind? If so, my Nathaniel was married to a woman named Anna and also had the following sons, but all of these may not have yet been born: Bramwell Watkins born 1832 in Albany, NY
Pierepont Watkins born 1835
Delaney Walter Watkins born 1838 in Washington, DC
Nathaniel Watkins born 1840
Granville Sharp Watkins born at Pierepont Manor?
I really appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks in advance,
Barb Rowbotham

MURDER!

Nickie Neil 06 Apr 1998 08:01:31
Can anyone help me find an article that was originally in the Watertown Standard? The headlines stated "Famous Murder of Civil War days recalled". Its about a bartender working in the Hotel Woodruff who got shot. According to the small article of Sept 10, 1921 Justice of the Peace Erwin B. Emerson recalls. I cannot find any article at the outbreak of the Civil War on this murder at the Library. They have The Reformer but not Watertown Standard. Do you know where I can find any information on this murder? There was a trial and a sergeant from the 8th Infantry stationed at Madison Barracks was tried and convicted of the murder in the 1st degree. The sergeant was sentenced to life imprisonenment.
Can you help me?
Thanks
Nickie Neil
