EZEKIEL PAYNE BEARDSLEY was born 19 Nov. 1770 in Kent, Litchfield Co., CT and died 1828 in Jefferson Co., NY He married MARTHA STUART in 1790. EZEKIEL and MARTHA moved from CT to Winfield, NY about 1812 and to Orleans, NY about 1820. They remained at LaFargeville as guests of REUBEN ANDRUS of Vermont. They decided to move closer to the St. Lawrence River so they journeyed down the East Ridge Trail and found themselves at Mullet Creek, which became Omar, NY. EZEKIEL and son JOHN built the first dam on Mullet Creek and also built the first sawmill. (Source: Nellie Beardsley Holt)

4) CHARLES WILLIAM BEARDSLEY (REV) 18 Jan 1800 in CT and died 5 March 1869 in Hastings NY. He married ANNIS STREETER on 31 March 1823. She died 31 March 1861 at 53 years.

MILES COOPER, pioneer settler of Jefferson Co., was born 27 May 1769 in Haddam CT. His wife, ARSENATH COWLES, was born there on 20 March 1771. After their marriage in Haddam, the couple settled in 1793 in Durham CT, where four of their children were baptized. In 1803 they came to Adams, Jefferson County, where they spent their lives. DEMSTER FAILING was born in Pamelia, NY on 7 March 1844. His paternal great-grandfather participated in the Revolutionary War, and after being taken prisoner by the Indians, was conveyed to Canada where he was sold for whiskey. After being in bondage for about four years he was redeemed and sent home and shortly after married a girl whose name was Smith. [See Pioneer Failing Family] He then purchased a farm which he cultivated until he was 80 years of age; he then sold it and moved to Jefferson Co., where he died in the 85th years of his age. JOHN FAILING, grandfather of DEMSTER FAILING, moved from the town of St. Johnsville, Montgomery Co., to the town of Pamelia, Jefferson Co., where he purchased a large dairy farm. After 50 years of dairy farming he retired. He married CATHERINE ELWOOD and they had a family of eight children, being three girls and five boys. He died in Antwerp at 92 years. BENJAMIN E. FAILING, father of Demster, was born in St. Johnsville, Montgomery Co in 1812. He was eight years old when his father brought the family to Pamelia, where he remained until he was 30. In 1837 he moved to Clayton and bought a farm which he cleared and cultivated. He remained there until 1894 and then moved to LaFargeville.

His wife was LUCY ANN AUGSBURY, daughter of ABRAM AUGSBURY of Pamelia.
They had four children: Louisa, Demster, Spencer, and Ida.

DEMSTER was reared on the farm of his parents and in 1866 purchased a farm of 170 acres; he resided there until 1896 and then purchased a tract of land in LaFargeville. He married ALMEDIA TAHASH, who was born in Alexandria NY, daughter of JOSEPH and SALLY MATICE TAHASH. JOSEPH TAHASH, father of ALMEDIA, was a shoemaker by trade. In later life he moved to Michigan where he died at 93 years. SALLY MATICE TAHASH TAHASH also died in Michigan at the age of 90. Of the eleven children of the couple, another daughter, MARIA, became the wife of JACKSON MAKEPEACE of Theresa, NY. (Source: Hist. Of Jefferson Co., by Oakes)


ABRAH AM VROOMAN was born in the Town of Denmark in Lewis Co., NY. His grandfather, ABRAHAM VROOMAN, son of ABRAHAM, lived in Cherry Valley NY where the Dutch ancestors of the family were among the first settlers. It was there that ABRAHAM VROOMAN, Jr., went to the Town of Denmark and took 100 acres of land. He died in 1813 at about 50 years, the land was not paid for and the family lost it. His wife, CATHERINE MERCKLEY, was the daughter of WILLIAM MERCKLEY, who was killed by Indians at the Battle of Oriskany.

ABRAHAM and CATHERINE VROOMAN had three sons and two daughters.

d) NANCY VROOMAN married OLIVER SMITH and lived in the town of Denmark.
e) ANGELINE married JOHN LASHER and lived near Natural Bridge in the Town of Diana.

JOHN VROOMAN was born 9 July 1797 at Cherry Valley and was only 16 when his father died. By working out and saving money he was able to buy land at Carthage. At one time he owned 700 acres of land in Denmark and Champion. He distributed the land in 1865 to his sons. JOHN VROOMAN 7 August 1877 and was buried in the West Carthage Cemetery. He married on 24 Feb. 1825 MARGARET BOSHART, who was born 21 Aug. 1800 and died 20 Sept 1837.

JOHN married (2) on 19 June 1838 MARIA EHLE, who was born 4 Nov. 1802 in Mapletown, Montgomery Co., NY, daughter of JACOB and JENNIE VanEVERY EHLE. JOHN and MARIA VROOMAN had three sons--CHARLES E., JOHN ERWIN and ABRAHAM. MARIA, their mother died on 10 Dec. 1882.

ABRAHAM VROOMAN, son of JOHN and MARIA, was born on 12 Aug. 1844 on the paternal homestead in Denmark, which was his father's first farm. In 1854, the family moved to the farm which became his by inheritance. He married on 13 Feb 1867 FLORA L. BLODGETT, daughter of WILLIAM J. and SALLY ANN (HENDERSON) BLODGETT, natives of Jefferson County and who lived and died at Chaumont. WINFIELD SCOTT BLODGETT, son of WILLIAM J. and SALLY BLODGETT, married DIANA B. PARRISH of Pamelia. (Source: Hist. Of Jefferson Co. by Oakes)
