Migrations Part 31: BIGELOW, HARDY, RUGGLES and GOODALE


ABEL BIGELOW was born in that part of Shrewsbury, now included in W. Boylston, on 19 July 1775, son of ABEL and MARTHA (BIGELOW) BIGELOW. He lived in Canada for some years and then moved to Redwood NY in about 1830. He married on 9 Jan 1813 AMELIA TILTON who was born in Gilmanton, NH on 27 May 1795 and died in Redwood on 15 Dec 1881. ABEL died in Redwood on 18 Oct 1867.

1) JULIETTE BIGELOW b. Shipton PQ 8 June 1814; m 18 April 1884 BENJAMIN WHITNEY, who was b 4 March 1811 and died 17 Aug 1874. They were residents of Redwood, NY.

2) HARRIET BIGELOW b Shipton on 30 Nov 1815; married 23 May 1837 to DAVID STIMSON. He died 17 July 1862 and she married 2) in 1870 to BLISS BURNAP. He died Aug. 1875.

3) MARTHA E. BIGELOW b Shipton 9 Aug 1817 and d 13 Nov 1839 at 22y 2 m; buried Alexandria

4) DAVID TILTON BIGELOW b Shipton 6 Dec 1819 and married 11 Sept 1845 to SARAH BREWSTER. They lived in Vicksburg, Miss., where he died 22 June 1858 and she died 15 Aug 1848.

5) SARAH FOSTER BIGELOW b Shipton 8 Dec 1821; married 1 Sept 1869 ALBERT L. WHITE, son of Major GEORGE and LYDIA WHITE; born Rutland NY on 11 Oct 1810. They resided in Redwood.

6) HANNAH T. BIGELOW b Shipton on 22 Jan 1824; married 19 may 1851 CHARLES B. RONEY b Massena NY on 7 May 1829; she died 18 Dec 1870. They resided Delray, MI

7) AMELIA BIGELOW b Shipton 3 Dec 1825; married 24 July 1865 to WILLIAM BARR. Resided Bovina, Miss.

JOEL BIGELOW was born 30 June 1752 Woburn, MA and died 14 Oct 1830 at Ellisburg, NY, son of JOTHAM BIGELOW and MARY RICHARDSON. He married in 1774 at Petersham, MA to SARAH STOWELL, b 1750 MA and d 1821 Guilford VT, daughter of JOHN STOWELL and SARAH PARMENTER. JOEL was active in the Militia and served in the Revolutionary War, with a rank of Colonel. He moved to Ellisburg NY after SARAH'S death to live with son, JOTHAM. JOEL is buried in the Bigelow Cemetery in Jefferson Co NY.

1) JOHN BIGELOW b 7 Nov 1774 Guilford VT; married 9 Mar 1797 Guilford VT to REBECCA GROW, b 4 May 1777 Windham, VT d 7 Jan 1845 Loraine, Jefferson Co., NY. She married, after John's death, (2) on 24 Dec 1834 at Ellisburg HUBBARD RANDALL.

2) JOTHAM BIGELOW was born in Guilford, VT on 28 Jan 1784, son of Capt. JOEL and SARAH (STOWELL) BIGELOW. He married on 1 Jan 1811 CELINDA/CYLINDA BULLOCK of Guilford and after her death 22 Apr 1824 at 34 y 4 m, he married (2)on 25 Sept 1824 NANCY NICHOLS. She was born 1786 and died 1866; buried in Ellisburg, NY. He moved from Guilford to Ellisburgh, Jefferson Co., NY where he was prominent in public affairs and was elected a member of the State Assembly from Jefferson County in 1837. He was also a Supervisor at Ellisburgh from 1831-36. He died 1860 at 76 yrs.

NATHAN GOODELL was born in Pomfret, Windham Co, CT on 8 Aug 1798, son of RICHARD and MARCIA (PARKHURST) GOODELL. He was the eleventh of their 12 children. He grew up on a farm and at 21 years moved to Henderson, Jefferson Co., NY, where he became a land agent for Mr. Henderson. He also operated a store, distillery and ashery. On 25 March 1825 he married HANNAH MOSELY WEEKS, daughter of a Swedenborgian clergyman. He served for two years on the steamer "Henry Clay", which ran between Buffalo and Detroit. In 1828 he moved to Detroit, and from there to Green Bay, WI. In 1835 he returned to Detroit and became a partner of Oliver Newberry in merchandising. He died on 2 June 1883 in Green Bay, WI of pneumonia. (Hist. Of Mayors of Green Bay, WI)


ERASTUS HARDY was born 31 Oct 1815 Sandy Creek NY, son of CHARLES HARDY and SUSANNAH PICKARD. The family moved to Leray in Jefferson Co about 1830. ERASTUS died 11 April 1871 and is buried in the Plessis Cemetery. He married on 1)15 Nov 1838 to JANE WILEY. JANE died 28 Jan 1847 at 29 years and is buried in Orleans Four Corners. He married (2) CATHERINE S. VAN BROCKLIN, and she died 16 June 1886 at 66 y 2 m 24 d.

BENJAMIN RUGGLES was born 11 Dec 1741, in Hardwick MA, son of BENJAMIN and ALICE (MERRICK) RUGGLES. He married on 26 Nov 1766 in Hardwick, MA ELIZABETH FAY, daughter of Deacon JAMES FAY and LYDIA CHILD. Dea. JAMES FAY and LYDIA CHILD were married in Watertown MA on 19 Dec 1727. (VIR)

AARON GOODALE Goodale of Salem, NY married on 9 February 1802 to BETSEY RUGGLES, b 9 Aug 1780. AARON GOODALE was a pioneer of St. Lawrence Co. and died in Hailesboro at 95 years. BETSEY died about 1865.

Children of AARON GOODALE and BETSEY RUGGLES:

1) RUGGLES GOODALE was born on 10 Sept 1803 in Salem, NY. In 1865 he moved to Antwerp in Jefferson Co NY and passed the balance of his life in retirement there. He died in Dec. of 1886. In August of 1830 he married BETSEY WRIGHT {WIGHT...NED} who was born 10 Sept 1810 in Oppenheim, Herkimer co NY, daughter of ABNER and POLLY (HOOPER) WRIGHT {WIGHT...NED}. She died in Sept. of 1888 in Rutland, Jefferson Co NY.

Children of RUGGLES GOODALE and BETSEY WRIGHT/WIGHT:

a)ADDISON W. GOODALE. was born 17 Aug 1831 in Fowler, St. Lawrence Co. In 1855 he began the study of medicine with Dr. Ira H. Abel of Antwerp. In June 1858 he graduated from medical college and began his practice in South Rutland. While serving in the Civil War he was an assistant surgeon until the end of the War. After two years in South Rutland he moved to Watertown and became an adjuster and superintendent of physicians for the Phoenix Life Ins. Co. He married on 12 Aug 1858 to HELEN J. FOWLER of Antwerp, daughter of LESTER N. FOWLER.

A) HATTIE G. GOODALE married ARTHUR B. ABERNETHY of NY City.

B) FLORENCE GOODALE married FRANCIS M. HUGO of Watertown NY

b) HELEN GOODALE married ALVIN CONKLIN of Rutland NY; ALVIN CONKLIN Conklin was the son of DAVID CONKLING (sic) and JOANNA GILBERT who had a family of 17 children. DAVID came from S. Salem NY to Rutland in 1808 and bought 80 acres of land.

HELEN GOODALE and ALVIN CONKLIN/CONKLING had three children; two adopted daughters were:

i) EULA DELL GOODALE (Mrs ARTHUR G. BEALS) of Carthage, and

ii) SARAH GOODALE. Sarah was murdered on 30 Nov 1875 at the age of 10 years.

DAVID CONKLIN was born 15 Nov 1773 in S. Salem, Westchester NY. He married 1)on 26 Jan 1797 in Rutland, Jefferson Co., NY to JOANNA GILBERT. She was born 22 Mar 1781, daughter of EPHRAIM GILBERT and JOANNA BRUSH. DAVID was the son of JAMES CONKLIN and SARAH PLATT BATES. DAVID died on 11 Oct 1866 in Rutland, Jefferson Co., N.Y. and is buried in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Jefferson Co., NY. JOANNA died on 4 Jan 1832 in Rutland, Jefferson Co. Their son, ALVIN CONKLIN, married HELEN GOODALE of Rutland, NY. ALVIN was born in 1824 and died in 1893. HELEN was born 1833 and died 1897.
