JOSIAH RATHBONE was born in Canaan CT in 1762; he married CATHERINE FITCH in Stonington CT and she was born in Stonington CT. He died 23 Aug. 1860 at Lowville NY and she died in Copenhagen NY at the home of her son, Nicholas, on the old homestead. Josiah served in the Revolutionary War and in 1778 was a private in the MA line. His pension began on 15 April 1818 and he was a resident of Lewis Co NY in 1834.

Children of Josiah Rathbone and Catherine Fitch:

  1. NICHOLAS P. RATHBONE born 18 Aug. 1805; married MARINDA RICHARDS; he died 13 March 1854 at 49 years 6 months. Marinda died 13 July 1857 at 53 yrs 5 months.
  2. DR. JOSIAH RATHBONE was born in Brookfield, Chenango Co NY on 12 Jan. 1795; he married in 1824 to 1st IRENE BALLARD and she died in 1856; and 2nd ELIZA FOSTER in 1868. She was born in Litchfield, daughter of JAMES S. FOSTER, Herkimer Co NY on 11 Feb 1805. He practiced medicine in Utica NY.
  3. JOHN LOOKER was born in Elizabethtown, NJ in 1794, son of JOHN AND POLLY (EARL) LOOKER, who were natives of New Jersey. He died at Adams, Jefferson Co NY on 19 Sept 1867. He married on 27 Sept. 1818 to CATHERINE FITCH RATHBONE, daughter of JOSIAH RATHBONE. JOHN LOOKER SR. was in the battle of Monmouth. Catherine went to live with her daughter, MRS. JOHN BALL in Lee MA in 1882 and died there on 11 May 1891. She was the first person baptized in the Baptist church in Adams, Jefferson Co NY on 7 Jan. 1848, soon after the church was formed. Catherine was buried in the rural cemetery next to her husband and son.

    1. AMANDA C. LOOKER born in Denmark Lewis Co NY on 12 May 1819. She married JOHN P. BALL on 15 Sept 1869 in Lee, MA;he died 25 Aug 1877.
    2. PRISCILLA LOOKER born in Denmark on 28 Nov 1820; married CLARK B. ALLEN of Russia NY on 16 Jan 1840. She died at Cold Brook, Herkimer Co NY on 1 April 1891.
    3. MARILLA M. LOOKER was born in Denmark on 15 May 1824; married IRA C. BARBER of Sackets Harbor on 27 Sept 1850. He died at Kalamazoo MI in 1884.
    4. HIRAM FITCH LOOKER was born in Denmark on 6 Aug 1827 and died 27 Sept 1831.
    5. ABBY A. LOOKER was born in Denmark on 9 Dec. 1830. She married B. F. WALWORTH of Adams, Jefferson Co., NY on 28 Dec. 1877. He was born in New England on 16 Nov. 1830 and enlisted in the New York Tenth Heavy Artillery in Sept. 1861; served three years.
    6. JOHN RATHBONE LOOKER was born at Martinsburg, Lewis Co NY on 23 March 1834; enlisted in Co. G. N. Y. Vols in May 1861; died of consumption on 7 April 1864.
    7. SARAH A. LOOKER was born at E. Martinsburg, Lewis Co NY on 18 Nov. 1838; married at Adams NY to JAMES R. BALDWIN of Auburn NY on 17 Mar. 1864.

  4. ALLEN FACTON RATHBONE was born in Lowville, NY in 1803, which was referred to as being in Jefferson Co NY at that time. He was the son of JOSIAH RATHBONE. Allen married ISABELLA MCINTOSH of London Ont. In 1843. Allen married (2) LIGER CORNINGS.
  5. AMELIA JANE RATHBONE; married DR. A. J. FRENCH
  6. THEOPHILUS FITCH RATHBONE born 23 July 1808; died 24 Aug 1869
  7. CATON RATHBONE ; married ___Fitch; died 1835

SUSAN MADDEN RATHBONE was born in Scipio NY on 9 May 1839, daughter of CHARLES RATHBONE, who was born 18 April 1796 and married ANNA KNIFFIN on 18 Sept 1818. Anna was born 28 April 1796, daughter of BENJAMIN KNIFFIN, born 22 March 1763, and CHARITY BRUNDIGE KNIFFIN, born 13 March 1766. Charles died 12 Nov. 1876 in Grand Rapids, MI. Susan married JOSEPH RYDER LAWTON on 24 Jan. 1864. He was born 14 Nov. 1839.

AMOS RATHBONE JR. was born in Richmond MA on 31 Jan. 1761 and married MARY WILLIAMS, daughter of JUDAH WILLIAMS of Williamstown Berkshire Co MA. Mary was born 23 May 1770 in Colchester CT and died 20 Aug 1830 at the residence of her daughter, ELECTA RATHBONE COOLEY, wife of ROBERT COOLEY of Sodus Point, Wayne co NY. She is buried next to husband, AMOS RATHBONE JR in Scipio, Cayuga Co NY.

TIMOTHY SKINNER was born at Mansfield MA on 10 Feb 1761. He served in the Revolutionary War. He married at Westmoreland, NY in Sept. 1790 to RUTH WARNER who was born in Westmoreland on 6 Nov. 1770 and died at Keene NH where two of her sons lived, on 2 July 1849 at 78 years.

HON. AVERY SKINNER was the son of TIMOTHY SKINNER and was born in Westmoreland, NH on 9 June 1796. He worked on his father's farm and in 1816 started for the Black River country on horseback; ten days later he reached Watertown, Jefferson Co NY where he remained for six years. In 1823 he moved to Oswego Co NY. He married 9 June 1822 ELIZABETH LATHROP, daughter of SOLOMON AND ANN (JONES) LATHROP. Her father was of Norwich CT and Mexico NY in 1804. Avery Skinner married 2nd in 1834 CHARLOTTE STEBBINS of Watertown NY.

GEORGE CADBY married MARGARET DEAN. George was born in England and settled in Jefferson Co NY. Their daughter, MARGARET CADBY was born 6 Nov 1853 in Jefferson Co NY, She married on 25 Sept. 1879 to EDMUND M. EVERTS, son of MYRON EVERTS and LUCRETIA MATTHEWS. Edmund was born 11 June 1850 in Mexico NY.

PHINEAS OSBORN settled in Herkimer Co., NY and then moved to Clayton, Jefferson Co., NY in 1817. His farm in Clayton was about three miles northwest of the falls, three miles north of Depauville, on what was known as Elm Flats.

ORLANDO OSBORN, son of Phineas, and No. 11 above, was born in Clayton, Jefferson Co NY on 11 May 1835. At an early age he began to learn the trade of miller in the old mill at Depauvlle. For several years he followed the trade in Jefferson Co. and then in Kansas and Arizona. He remained in the west for 16 years and in 1898 return to NY and in partnership with his son, W. H. OSBORN, purchased the mills at Woodville and Valley Mills in Madison Co., NY, where he died on 6 Jan. 1905. He married on 23 Dec. 1858 to ELIZA FAIRE, who was born in Clayton, Jefferson Co. on 3 Sept. 1836, daughter of THOMAS AND MARGARET (BEARON) FAIRE. Her father was born in Dublin, Ireland and owned land in Dublin. He came to Canada in the British army and when his term of service expire, he settled in Clayton and was a farmer and also worked in the Ashery. MARGARET BEARON was a native of France and came with her father's family and settled in Montreal, Canada. Thomas Faire died 13 April 1890 and Margaret in 1891.

WILLIAM H. OSBORN, and no 4. above, was born in Cape Vincent, Jefferson Co NY on 16 Aug. 1864. He worked in the mill with his father and had limited schooling. At age 15 he worked in a mill owned by his uncle, PHINEAS ALDEN OSBORN, at Dexter, NY and later for two years at Herrick & Son in Watertown, NY. In 1891 he bought the old Bryant Mill at the village of Evans Mills, NY and conducted it until he sold it in 1895. Two months later in May 1895 he bought the old S. H. Pitcher Mill in Adams, NY, which he ran for three years. In 1896, in partnership with is father, he bought the Woodville Mill. In March 1898 he bought the Almerion N. Thomas Mill in Mexico NY, which he ran until 1910. He married 1st on 5 April 1888 to MARY C. CASLER of Dexter, Jefferson Co., NY, daughter of MELZA and LYDIA CASLER. She died 31 Oct. 1895 and he married 2nd on 27 June 1900 to LILLIAN M. INGERSOLL, who was born at Palermo, Oswego Co NY on 1 April 1871, daughter of ALONSON AND LYDIA (JENNINGS) INGERSOLL.

Roswell, son of Russel Woodruff, according to the best evidence at hand,m and as shown by the census, certainly of the family of John Woodruff, born probably at Burlington, CT 10 May 1763. He settled in the town of Leray, NY at Sanfords Corners in 1804 and died in 1830. He married Lois Patterson.

  2. NANCY WOODRUFF born 29 July 1845 and married DEMPSTER D. TAGGART in 1862; she died 13 Oct. 1868
  3. NORMAN WOODRUFF, twin of Nancy born 29 July 1845 in Theresa, Jefferson Co. After leaving school he lived for several years on the family homestead and in 1875 moved to Mexico, Oswego Co., NY. He opened a grocery business and died in Mexico on 18 Dec. 1908. He married on 1 June 1881 to MARGARET M. HADLEY, who was the adopted daughter of ABRAM AND JEMIMA TOWNSEND HADLEY of Mexico.

ADDENDUM TO PIONEER WILLIAM HART OF JEFFERSON CO., NY and DELIA WILLIS. Additional information on that family:

JOHN J. HART, son of the above couple, was born in Adams, Jefferson Co NY on 4 March 1830. He began his business life as a clerk in a dry goods store in Adams. He died in 1896. He married MARY E. GIDLEY (Gridley?) who was born 1 Jan 1840. Mary went to live with her daughter, MRS. SMITH MOTT BOSTICK in Syracuse NY. Mary's mother married a man named Mathews for her second husband and Mrs. John J. Hart was known as Mary E. Mathews.

JOSEPH WITTER was the son of JOSIAH WITTER and TACY REYNOLDS and was born at Hopkinton, RI on 28 March 1773. He moved to Lewis co NY in 1800 and settled in the town of Pinckney. He was a soldier in the War of 1812 and died in Jefferson Co of disease resulting from exposure in the service. He married first in 1803 to WAITY GREEN who was born 20 Dec. 1787 and died in Adams Center, Jefferson Co NY on 9 Sept. 1873. She married 2nd to JOHN TROWBRIDGE. The Witters lived in Rensselaer, then Madison Co NY and came to Jefferson Co before 1812 early settlers of the county.

  1. EMILY WITTER born 1804; died at home of her brother Russell on 10 Feb 1852 at 47.

RUSSELL WITTER was born 1 Sept. 1806 and attended school in Adams, NY. He was a farmer in Jefferson County and married on 22 Sept 1828 to SARAH WILLIAMS, who was born 27 March 1798 and died at Verona on 21 Dec. 1865, daughter of Captain William Williams, who was lost at sea before Sarah was born. The Williams family went to Verona NY and Sally was left an orphan when quite young, brought up by her aunts and uncles. Russell died at Verona on 1 May 1861.

  1. MARY ANN WITTER born 1 Sept 1830 and died 27 Nov 1873; she married ALBEN SAUNDERS who died 5 May 1864.

  3. SUSAN A. WITTER born 18 Dec. 1837; married Oct. 1869 to ORIN PECKHAM of Worcester MA.

CHARLES PERKINS ELLIS was born in Ashfield MA on 20 March 1812, son of WILLIAM AND RHODA LAMROCK ELLIS. On 15 Dec. 1839 he married SARAH HARRIS who was born 11 May 1816 in Henderson, Jefferson Co NY and who died 7 Jan 1894 at her home in LaGrange, WI at 78 years. She was the daughter of JEREMIAH HARRIS and PRISCILLA COLE of Springfield PA who settled there in 1824, having left Jefferson Co., NY.

BENJAMIN LARNED married SARAH WILLOUGHBY, daughter of WESTEL WILLOUGHBY of Newport, NY. He lived there for some years and then moved to Canandaigua where he was a cooper. He died in Poland NY on 19 March 1839 and Sarah died 29 Feb. 1848. SAMUEL J. LARNED, their son, was born 23 Nov 1812 in Poland NY and died at Ellisburg, Jefferson Co NY. Samuel married ABBIE REYNOLDS, who was born at Oriskany NY.

BENJAMIN P. LARNED, son of Samuel J. and Abbie, was born at Pierrepont Manor NY. He was educated there in the public schools. For most of his life he was a farmer be was also an undertaker and a leading businessman of the village. He also served as a county sheriff. He married MARY ALLEN, daughter of HIRAM ALLEN.

  2. JESSIE A. LARNED married EVERETT ROUNDS
  3. CLARENCE A. LARNED was born at Pierrepont Manor, Jefferson Co NY on 25 Aug. 1870. He attended the public schools and the Adams Collegiate Institute. Eventually he became a large scale dealer in lumber to the wholesale trade. In 1900 he married MAUDE B. HOUSE, daughter of ALBERT AND ANN HOUSE.

CADWALLADER CHILD, son of CEPHAS CHILD and MARY CADWALLADER, was born at Plumstead, Bucks Co. PA on 18 Aug. 1776. He married in 1800 to ELIZABETH REA, daughter of JOHN and JANE REA of Philadelphia PA and in 1805 moved to Philadelphia, Jefferson Co., NY. The county Historyories for Jefferson make note of his survey skills and credit him with being an early settler. Cadwallader purchased 440 acres of land, was a farmer, and acted as agent and surveyor in Jefferson Co. for JAMES LERAY DE CHAUMONT, a wealthy landholder of France.

  6. NAYLOR CHILD was born 25 Dec. 1815 in Philadelphia, Jefferson Co NY and died at Masonville Iowa on 22 Jan 1897. He married on 24 Aug. 1864 to JULIA ROGERS, daughter of SAMUEL AND RACHEL (STRICKLAND) ROGERS of Philadelphia NY.

Their children were born in Masonville Iowa.

NOBLE E. TRACY was born in Shelburne, VT and died Feb. 1899 in Champion, Jefferson Co., NY. His wife died in Bombay. Noble E. was the son of CHRISTOPHER TILMAN TRACEY who settled early near Black Lake and died in Moira NY about 1800 age 75 years.
