1. ELIAS SAGE SR was born 17 Apr 1758 and died 29 Feb 1852, son of Samuel SAGE SR. (1732-1802) and PRUDENCE HURLBUT (1730-1811). He was a farmer.
The following is quoted from Edith Sage (Armstrong Hoyt) DAR Application dated 23 October 1906 from the book Massachusetts
Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War: -- "Elias Sage was on the payroll for six months in a company of men raised by the
town of Sandisfield Mass. for service in the Continental Army of the Republic during the year 1780." This information is correct,
but constitutes only one of three entries on page 740 of the book referred to above.
We have now obtained and reviewed the National Archives and Record Administrations Revolutionary War Pension and Service
Record filed by Elias Sage Sr. This is a 57 page copy of what the United States Government authorized by act of Congress in
1832 required for the purpose of awarding a pension to the veterans of the Revolutionary War.
There are many personal testimonies recorded therein testifying to the fact that the widow Sage was the legal wife of Elias at the
time of his death and she would be the legal heir and continue to receive his pension of $60.00 per year. Elias Sage's personal
testimony defines the actual time of service that he served, giving details as when he served and where he served ,and in most
instances what officer he served under. The total time of his service in the Revolutionary War was 16 months and 15 days. (There
were six different times of enlistment and his respective discharge; health being one reason and disbanding on two occasions of
the Company he was attached to.
He lived in Sandisfield until 1800 when he moved his family to the Town of Turin, Lewis County, NY, and 1804 they removed to the Town of Denmark, Lewis County, NY. Elias and Elizabeth do appear in the 1800 US. Census in Turin with only one other male, aged 16-26. This was probably Martin who would have been 16 years old in 1800. This must have been the time of their first expedition to Lewis County, without the entire family. Daughter Rhoda was born in 1800 and was not present in Turin; apparently as yet unborn at the time of the census, or left in the care of others with the rest of the family.
In 1801, he and Elizabeth took a mortgage for 218 pounds, 2 shillings, on Lot 23 in Turin. Actually, Lewis County did not exist until 1805 when it was formed from Oneida County but it was a well established County at the time of his affidavit (20 September 1832) when he was living in the Town of Denmark.
