JEFFERSON COUNTY NEW YORK

CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS' BIOGRAPHIES:

JOHN STRATTON OF HENDERSON

~~*~~

John Stratton of Henderson was a sargent when he was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg, on the first day of the battle. He is listed in the book, These Honored Dead, which goes into detail about the Union dead of that battle. John Stratton was a Sgt in the English Army and apparently left the army to come to the US in 1850 or so with his wife, Mary Ann Nelson . Their first Born Thomas, who was born in Quebec, died from diease in the civil war andis buried in Baltimore. John left 9 children and one to be born upon his death. Seeing all those names, many of which I recognize makes you realized the enormous cost and sadness brought on by that war...

I named my son after John Stratton.... Jonathan Leland Wilson Rhodes...
