DROWNED-In Black River Bay, on the 25th ult, JAS. D., son of WM. S. and MARY C. PETTIT, in the 16th year of his age. It appears that on the morning of that day several boys in the vicinity assembled, by previous arrangement, at a place known to them as Galloway's Pond, about two miles from Sackets Harbor, for the purpose of spending a “Merry Christmas” in skating. After amusing themselves a short time, by the persuasion of some of the company, a number of them started off to join another company who were skating near Sackets Harbor—being confident as persons were crossing and re-crossing from the Harbor to Pillar Point, that the ice was perfectly safe. After having accomplished about three-fourths of the distance—James, being a little in advance of the Others, ran upon ice formed by one one night's freezing; he with two others were precipitated into the water—These latter, being nearer strong ice, were by two of the company—one of them the brother of the deceased—assisted out, but James, being farther in, soon sank in about sixty feet depth of water. Much credit is due to Capt. Lyman Payne and Mr. Wm. Conlin, for their assistance and energy in recovering the body—within some two hours from the time it first disappeared. The funeral services were attended by the Rev. Mr. Young, pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Sackets Harbor, on the 28th ult, while a large concourse of people, followed the remains to the place of interment.

In this village, on the morning of the 28th Dec., after a brief illness, WILLIAM PALMER, one of our most aged and esteemed fellow citizens. He was born in Branford, New Haven Co., Conn. Jan. 27th 1781 and consequently had nearly attained the 80th year of his age. His mother died during his childhood, and at the age of fifteen he left his home to reside among strangers in Oneida Co., near Trenton Falls, which was then to a great extent an unbroken wilderness. In 1821 he left Oneida for Jefferson County, residing one year at Carthage and subsequently at Evans Mills, until 1851, at the age of threescore and ten he retired from business and removed to the village of Watertown. He was a carpenter and joiner by trade, but after he removed to Jeff. Co., engaged in mercantile pursuits. (very long obituary followed the notice.)
