OBITUARY- DR. N. O. BEMIS died last Tuesday morning at minutes before 3 o'clock. It is seven weeks ago that he was thrown from his carriage and received the injuries which proved fatal. Never since the accident has he been entirely conscious...Dr. Bemis was born in Chenango Co. He graduated from a medical college in Mass. and after practice in that state and Vermont for a short time, he moved to Adams in the fall of 1855...He was married three times; his first wife was Miss Adams, his second Miss Abbie Scott and his third, Miss Maggie Tubbs, who still survives him. He has four children by his first wife, viz: MRS. LEWIS G. FISH of Adams; MRS. JOHNSON of Belleville and JOHN and CHARLES BEMIS of Springfield, MA...

OBITUARY of MRS. JUDGE STRONG:
...announcing the death of the venerable and respected MRS. STEPHEN STRONG, formerly MRS. NORRIS M. WOODRUFF, which occurred at an early hour at her late residence on Arsenal Street, Sunday morning, Sept. 16, in her 86th year. She had been confined to her bed but a few days and passed away quietly and peacefully...,MRS. ROXANNA T. STRONG was the eldest child of ELI BUSH and ROXANNA TERRY, and was born in Sangersfield, Oneida Co., March 19, 1798. Her father's family consisted of ten children, six of whom survive her. She came to Watertown in 1814, and became a member of the family of the late Joseph Goodale, whose wife was her aunt. Here she became acquainted with NORRIS M. WOODRUFF to whom she was married October 5th, 1817...Mr. Woodruff died January 16, 1857...they reared up to manhood and womanhood nine children...four of whom survive her. Of these, three are daughters: MRS. HOWELL COOPER, MRS. JUDGE SCHLEY formerly MRS. HENRY KEEP and MRS. ROSWELL P. FLOWER...she also leaves 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren...On the 19th of June 1861, Mrs. Woodruff was married to JUDGE STEPHEN STRONG of Owego, Tioga Co....He died April 6, 1866...The funeral was largely attended from her late residence yesterday at 3 p.m., Rev. G. J. Porter officiating...Note: this is a fairly lengthy obituary and descendants will want an entire copy.
OBITUARY of SAMUEL D. MORSE:
In the death of SAMUEL D. MORSE, which occurred about 8 o'clock Saturday evening, a worthy man has gone to his final repose. Fifty years ago, Mr. Morse came to this county from the sterile hills of New Hampshire, bringing with him his entire inherited wealth, which consisted of a firm purpose to promptly respond to the convictions of duty...he purchased his beautiful home on Dry Hill...

OBITUARY - JOHN S. WARNER:
Capt. JOHN S. WARNER of Henderson, died on the morning of the 13th of September, at the residence of his son, William, near Algonac, Mich., whither he had gone in the early summer at the earnest desire of his son. Capt. Warner was the son of WILLIAM WARNER, one of the early settlers of Henderson, and the eldest of five children, and his death is the first in the family since 1835, when a brother, Alanson, was drowned. The surviving members are: HENRY R., EDWARD B., of Algonac, Mich., and MRS. AUSTIN KILBY of Buffalo...He had always been a resident of Henderson...he was the father of ten children, seven of whom survive him...

OBITUARY - TIMOTHY HOSFORD:
TIMOTHY HOSFORD, of the town of Wilna, died last Friday. He was 88years of age and came to this county from Connecticut in 1820. He purchased a farm on the Alexander Road near Carthage, where he has resided since that time and which is now owned by one of his sons. He married in his native State and his wife accompanied him to this county. She died about two months ago...

Many of the readers of the Re-Union will regret to learn of the death of MRS. JOHN EDWARDS, which occurred at the residence of her brother-in-law in Brooklyn, last Friday. Mrs. Edwards was a daughter of the late LAWRENCE HAYES of this city, and formerly resided here, where she had many friends. Her husband survives her. The remains were brought to this city Monday and interred at Brookside.

OBITUARY - GEORGE WILKIE:
GEORGE WILKIE, who has resided some time past with his son, H. W. WILKIE, at 130 Washington Street was found dead in his bed Saturday morning by a member of his family, who went into his room about 5 o'clock. The body was still warm, showing that life had become extinct but a short time before. Mr. Wilkie was enjoying his usual health and retired about 7 p.m. It is supposed that old age was the cause of his death. He was entering upon his 89th year. Mr. Wilkie has resided in Jefferson Co., from boyhood and has been a resident of Watertown for the past 19 years. He served in the War of 1812 under Captain Camp of Sackets Harbor and was universally respected and esteemed in this community. Three sons survived Mr. Wilkie. They are: H. W. WILKIE, of this city, C. N. WILKIE of Paris, France, and WARREN WILKIE of Chicago.

OBITUARY- LORENCE TIMERMAN:
It is our painful duty to chronicle the death of one of the oldest inhabitants of the town of LeRay, Mr. Lorence Timerman, who died October 6, 1883 age 87 years. He was born in Herkimer co., in 1796, came into this county with his father in the year 1804 and settled in the town of LeRay, one mile south of Evans Mills. At that time, Evans Mills contained but two or three log cabins and the country surrounding was but a howling wilderness..the traces of the Redman had not yet disappeared from the then almost impenetrable forests, for on the same farm that his father settled there were traces of a large Indian encampment, and in after years when the forest were leveled and the fields cultivated, the subject of this sketch, often picked up arrowheads fashioned out of a peculiar kind of flint not know to this county. He resided on the same farm for nearly 80 years and by patient toil cleared up land, erected a brick kiln and burned the brick and erected one of the first, and what was then the largest brick dwelling house in northern New York. Six children survive him: MRS. POOLE, of Theresa; MRS. RARRICK of Philadelphia; MRS. BARR, who resided in Nebraska; MRS. BARLOW and his only son, FREDERICK, resides in Iowa; MRS. O. W. KING resides on the old homestead in Leray. Mr. Timerman served in the War of 1812, did duty at Brownville and along the St. Lawrence River...he was a member of the Methodist Church...his funeral was largely attended.
OBITUARY - HIRAM DEWEY:
The residents of Watertown were shocked and surprised Sunday morning to learn of the sudden death of HIRAM DEWEY, which occurred Saturday at about 10 p.m. at his residence on Washington, corner of Paddock Street. His death was very sudden...he was born in Warren Co., NY, September 6, 1813. He was the son of DAVID DEWEY, who was of New England birth and whose forefathers came to America from England about 1620. His mother was a daughter of BENJAMIN COLE of Rhode Island, who was a soldier in the Battle of Lexington and under Gen. Washington when he defeated the Hessians at the Battle of Trenton. His forefathers were also of English birth. His father was in the Battle of Plattsburg in the War of 1812 and when Hiram was only four years old removed to Washington County and remained there until June, 1825, when he with his family consisting of himself, wife and eight children, removed to the town of Adams, this county. The father died in February, 1826. The mother lived until October, 1859 and died at the age of 72. Hiram was the fourth child and third son of his father's family and upon his father's death he with his elder brothers worked the farm and worked out by the month to support the mother and younger children. At the age of 19 and in the year 1832, he married Miss SYLVIA MARBLE, daughter of NATHAN MARBLE of this county...His first wife died September 17, 1845, since which time he has been married three times, his last wife being Miss DELLA SYLVESTER of Clayton, who still survives him. Nine children also survive Mr. Dewey: ADDIS E; WINFIELD S.; ALVIN H. and Misses ETTA and HATTIE DEWEY of this city; MRS. GEO. R. WELCH of Rochester; ADELBERT A., of Brockville, Ont.; EDGAR A. of Orleans, and MRS. L. M. WAITE of Leicester, Mas. With the exception of Mrs. Waite, all arrived at the homestead Monday morning. It seems to be settled in the minds of his physicians that Mr. Dewey died of paralysis of the heart, of which he had symptoms for some time previous to the last attack.

SUDDEN DEATH - Friday evening MRS. RICHARD HOLDEN came up town to make some purchases. On arriving at Wilson's meat market, she became exhausted and sat in a chair for some time, when she had started for home. On reaching Beebee's Island she found she could go no further, and with difficulty reached the house of Wm. Roughsedge, on Eames Street. On entering the house she was placed upon a lounge and in a few moments expired. The daughter of the deceased was summoned from a party to her parent's deathbed. Dr. Trowbridge arrived in time to learn the cause of her death, thus obviating the necessity of an inquest. RICHARD HOLDEN, her husband, is now very ill. JAMES HOLDEN, RICHARD HOLDEN, JR., Miss JENNIE HOLDEN and MRS. DEXTER PHILLIPS are the children who survive her to mourn their mother's loss.

OBITUARY - SAMUEL McNITT, JR.:
Died, at his residence near Depauville, Saturday, November 3, 1883, SAMUEL McNITT, Jr., age 83 years, 8 months, 9 days. He was born in the town of Plainfield, Otsego Co. At the age of six years he removed with his parents to Smithville, Jefferson Co. When 31 years of age, Mr. McNitt established a residence in the town of Clayton and has resided upon the same farm since that time, a period of 50 years. He was a son of CAPT. SAMUEL McNITT, who became distinguished for skill and bravery at the Battle of Sackets Harbor in the War of 1812. Capt. McNitt was the recipient of a beautiful sword from the commanding officer, General Brown, in recognition of his heroic conduct at that battle. The sword remained in the hands of members of the famly until a few years since, when Samuel McNitt, Jr., sent it to relatives of Gen. Brown living in the west. Mr. Samuel McNitt, Jr., also served in the War of 1812 as orderly upon the staff of Gen. Brown, and was but 16 years of age at the expiration of his term of service...He will be greatly missed in the community in which he has resided so long, and the wife and three daughters have the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement.
neuralgia for a short time, but able to be about even no later than Tuesday morning. About noon he complained of pain in his chest, and Dr. Johnson was called, but did not discover any alarming symptoms. After noon he said he felt feverish, and his wife administered a cooling drink. He said he felt as though he could sleep. His wife sat near his couch on a chair and in a few minutes heard him gasp for breath. Before help could be summoned he was dead. Mr. Hunting was about 56 years of age, was born in the town of Henderson and has sold milk in this city for the past 12 years. He leaves a wife and one son to mourn his loss. An affliction of the heart is supposed to have been the cause of Mr. Hunting's death.

MICHAEL FITZGERALD, of this city, was killed last week in the accident on the West Shore Road, near New York, on account of which was in last week's Re-Union. Fitzgerald leaves a wife and one child, who are residents of this city, to mourn his loss. He was a son-in-law of DENNIS CONROY. Fitzgerald was for a number of years a conductor on the R. W. & O. Road, and was a faithful and efficient employee as well as a very popular man among the fellow workmen, who are grieved to hear his fate. His remains were taken to Canada for interment.

OBITUARY--REV. FATHER MACKEY:
Rev. Father Mackey, the oldest Catholic priest in this section, and for many years Vicar General of this diocese, died at Ogdensburg, Tuesday, Dec. 4. The Journal of that city, of Dec. 6, gives the following particulars. JAMES MACKEY was born in Middletown Co., Armagh, Ireland in the year 1808 and emigrated to America in 1833. He studied about 7 years for the priesthood and was then ordained in the rites of the Roman Catholic Church...Note: this is a fairly lengthy obituary which includes his church and local works.
OBITUARY--MRS. ACHSA WAKEFIELD:
On Monday morning, Dec. 3d, ACHSA WAKEFIELD died at her residence, two miles from the Village of Redwood, age 85 years and 2 months. She was born in the town of Reading, Vermont, on the 14th day of October, 1798. She was the oldest of a family of six: ACHSA, SALLY, ASA, JAMES, DAVID and ENOS, all of whom have now passed away except her brother, DAVID, who has reached his 75th year. She was married to JAMES WAKEFIELD of Winsor, Vermont, in 1818 at the age of 20 years and resided with him at Winsor and Manchester until 1831, when they removed with their family, which at this time consisted of five children; LOFTUS, LORENTHA, SALUDA, CEYLON and ELMEROA, to Huntingville, Jefferson Co., NY, where her husband engaged in the sawmill and lumbering business; and where their youngest child was born. They remained there for seven years and removed to Hermon, St. Lawrence Co., and only remained a short time, removing thence to New Haven Oswego Co. They returned from there to Watertown in 1841, where they remained until 1853 when they removed to her residence near Redwood, where she lived about 30 years. Her husband died in 1855 and since that time she has resided with her daughters: MRS. HENRY HAFFORD and Miss LORENTHA and SALUDA WAKEFIELD. Her oldest son, LOFTUS, died in 1876 in Wisconsin at age 56 years. The remainder of her children, CEYLON and ZERA, both reside in this county. On the 14th of last October, her five children and her brother with other members of their families assembled at her residence on the occasion of her 85th birthday...Her funeral was largely attended at her residence, Dec. 5th. The services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Stewart of Watertown, who officiated 17 years before when she laid away him by whose side she is now lying.
LEONARD ALLEN
died Wednesday, Dec. 5, at East Hounsfield. The deceased was born in the town of Hartland, Windsor Co., Vermont, April 21, 1795. In the spring of 1808, his father, MAJOR EBENEZER ALLEN, with is wife and ten children, emigrated from Vermont, and settled on the farm now owned by L. F. ALLEN, where the subject of this sketch has ever since lived, with th exception of three years of residence in the town of Orleans, in this county. He served in the War of 1812 and took part in the Battle of Sackets Harbor at the age of 18. On June 20, 1818, he was married to EUNICE KNOWLTON, who still survives him. Over 65 years as husband and wife they have been permitted to enjoy each other's society and walk the journey of life together. Six children were born to them, four of whom survive him: MRS. E. A. McBRIDE of Bancroft, Mich.; MRS. WM. FISK of Limerick; MRS. S. E. FIELD and L. F. ALLEN of East Hounsfield. One child died in infancy and one, MRS. O. A. OSTRANDER, late of East Hounsfield, died Dec. 11, 1872.
MRS. D. M. RICE:
The people of this community were shocked Friday morning to learn of the death of Mrs. D. M. RICE, which occurred at the residence of her father, ISAAC BRINTNAIL in the town o f Hounsfield. Mrs. Rice was widely known and highly respected and was an estimable lady in all that the words imply. A husband and two children survive her. Her age was 35 years, 3 months, 14 days.
MRS. ESTHER WAGER:
December 6th, MRS. ESTHER WAGER, mother of GEO. W. WAGER, and widow of the late W. W. WAGER, died at the residence of her son near New York City. Her husband practiced law for many years at Brownville and her remains were brought to that village Saturday for interment.
WILLIAM S. WOODHULL:
WILLIAM S. WOODHULL, a former Watertownian, and at one time a partner of GEO. WIGGINS, died at San Francisco, Tuesday, of congestion of the lungs. Mr. Woodhull was well known in this vicinity and had a host of friends in this city.
GEORGE W. JENKS:
GEORGE W. JENKS died at his home in Rodman, Tuesday, age 93 years and 12 days. He was the oldest person in the town and was a pensioner of the War of 1812, and also a member of the Masonic fraternity.

OBITUARY-MRS. ELIAS GETMAN:
MRS. ELIAS GETMAN died at her home, the Getman house, in Theresa, Monday evening. She was the widow of the late Capt. ELIAS GETMAN, and was universally esteemed and beloved...her family and friends have the heartfelt sympathy of all who have ever known her.
MRS. RUFUSS PARISH:
MRS. PATTY PARISH, wife of RUFUS PARISH, died at the residence of her son, GILBERT PARISH, in Clayton, on Dec. 7th, 1883. Mrs. Parish was born in Paris, Onondaga Co., NY on May 16th, 1800, and was therefore age 83 years, 6 months and 21 days. She had been a resident of the town of Clayton for about 40 years. She was taken sick last February, and has been a great sufferer at times. She has had the best of medical skill and the very best of nursing. Everything that could be done was done to stay the death messenger, but God saw fit to call her home. She leaves quite a large family to mourn her loss...
NICHOLAS SHERRY:
NICHOLAS SHERRY breathed his last at 8 o'clock p.m. Thursday at his residence No. 10 Grove Street. Mr. Sherry has a host of friends in this city who deeply regret his loss to the community...Though always sickly, he has won considerable prominence among the mechanics of this city. He was 34 years of age and 6 months. He was born in Ireland and came to this country and this city (then a village) when about four years of age...He leaves a mother, a brother, Mr. JAMES SHERRY, and a sister, MRS. J. H. CONNELL, besides a wife and four children, the youngest of whom is only three months old.
E. F. COOPER:
Wednesday night at about 8:15, ELIAS F. COOPER breathed his last. everything was against his recovery from the accident which occurred to him three days before, and thought the doctors and relatives were made hopeful at times, Mr. Cooper never recovered consciousness for a sufficient length of time to speak to his wife and daughters. He was born at Ox Bow. He was the sixth son and seventh child of ABRAHAM and HARRIET COOPER, who resided at Ox Bow for many years. Abraham Cooper was born in Long Island and was made quite prominent by his industry, integrity and rectitude. ..Elias worked with his brother in Ox Bow for a number of years. He came to this city about 1847 or 1848 and was in the employ of HOWELL COOPER, another brother, who was in the hardware business in this city for some time. He was taken into partnership by his brother... He remained in this business until 1870 when he retired from business. ...Mr. E. F. Cooper was married in 1855 and was 59 years of age...At the time of his death he was a member of the board of health...Mr. Cooper has four brothers now living: ABRAM COOPER of Syracuse; NICHOLAS and GEORGE COOPER of Ox Bow; and JOHN COOPER of Montclair, N.J....
