SOME WESTCOTT FAMILIES IN JEFFERSON CO., NY:


GARDINER WESTCOTT was born 1 Sept. 1744 and died 23 March 1808. He married MARY KNIGHT. In January of 1805 he moved from Deerfield, NY to Jefferson County with his sons: CALEB, HENRY and PALMER and perhaps other children of the family arrived with him. They located about Camps Mills in the Hounsfield Township and Field's Settlement, just across the line in Watertown Township. They were the parents of 11 children: Abigail, Sarah, Caleb, Gardiner, Jr., Mary, Palmer, John, Henry, Hannah, Shubal and Daniel.

3)Caleb b probable Cranston Twp., RI May, 1768; died Sacket Harbor, NY; m 1795 to Eunice Nelson, daughter of Henry Nelson of Deerfield, NY. At about 25 years (1793) he went with his parents to Deerfield where he was married there two years later. In 1805 he moved to Hounsfield Township in Jeff. Co., NY and it was there on December 13 of that year that their sixth child was born. In 1807, Caleb was a lieutenant in Capt. Jabez Foster's Co. of Col. Abijah Putnam's Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence Counties. He resigned his commission in 1811 and in that same year was commissioned lieutenant in Capt. Jhn Adam's Co., Lt.-Col. Gershom Tuttle's Regiment, in which he served in the War of 1812. Family tradition states he was at Sacket Harbor, when in some manner he was successful in delaying the advance of the British until American troops came up. Ch: Nathan, Mercy, Charlotte, James, Gardiner, Giles, Lovina, Nelson, Mary, Caleb, Jr. and perhaps an infant who died early.

They were the parents of 11 children: (Westcott surname):

a)His son, Isaac Westcott, lived in Theresa, Jeff. Co. in 1860 and his eldest child was Melvin not Malvin.
b)Jason Westcott, lived in Orleans, Jeff. Co., in 1850. His daughter, Frances, was born 12 August 1850, not 7 Sept.

2)Mercy Westcott
3)Charlotte Westcott m 1815 to Silas Spicer, not Spencer. Their descendants lived in Watertown, NY in 1933.
4)James S. Westcott b Deerfield, NY 1798. He married Adeline Smith who was born 1808, daughter of Eben Smith of NY. They probably lived on at least a part of the original farm of his grandfather, Gardiner Westcott until 1845, when he sold his land there and five years later was counted in the census of 1850 at Hounsfield with his wife, Adeline and six children.

Children of James S. Westcott and Adeline Smith: a)Martha b 1833; married her third cousin, Ashel Westcott, Jr. of Ashel, Daniel, of pioneer Gardiner Westcott.
b)Rua S. Westcott b 1834
c)James A. Westcott b Sackets Harbor 1837; d 1895. He married Mary Case and died prior to her husband. They were the parents of 8 children:

c1)Albert b 1861; became blind at age 3. He attended the Westcott Beach reunion near Sackets Harbor in 1938.

5)Gardiner Westcott, b Deerfield 1801, son of Caleb and Eunice.

6)Giles Westcott b Hounsfield Township, Jeff. Co., Dec. 13, 1805; d. Arlington, Ohio 7 August 1891; married 11 January 1831 to Almira Sawyer b 30 June 1812; Sept. 1891. His obituary notice states that he moved from the place of his birth to Solon, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio in 1834 and from there to a farm near Arlington, Hancock, Ohio in 1845. He and his wife were members of the Arlington ME Church for 45 years. They were the parents of 7 children: Mary, Eunice, Augusta, Nelson, Eliza, Alvira and Levi.

7)Lovina married DeForst Bassett and lived Henderson, NY.

8) Nelson b 1812; lived in Henderson, NY in 1850; married Sarah (Mary) Bell b Henderson Township 1814, daughter of Thomas Henry b 1783 and Margaret Leckie b 1783, Bell, natives of Scotland. Known children: Louisa, Clarence, Henry, Walter

10)Caleb, Jr.

11)George Wellington b Sacket Harbor, NY 11 March 1813; died on his farm near Sacket Harbor on 28 June 1863. He married Catherine Bell, b 17 Feb. 1812 and d 20 June 1884, sister of Sarah, who married Nelson, brother of George W. He was master of the schooner, "G.W. Westcott" on Lake Ontario and became known as Captain George. They purchased and settled in 1851 a farm tract of 190 acres, bordering on Lake Ontario in Hounsfield Twp., at a section locally known as "Chestnut Ridge" some three miles south of Sacket Harbor. There was a large grove with a bathing beach, known as "Wescott Beach: where in 1934, 6, 7, and 8 the Westcotts of northern NY, which was Chapter No. 4 of the national Society of Stukely Westcott Descendants, held largely attended reunions. They had 5 children: Florence, Wellington, Byron, Nelson and Edward.

11b)Wellington George, b 1 May 1842, d 2 Dec. 1912; married May 28, 1873 to Mary E. Littlefield of Henderson, b 7 Aug. 1851 and d 10 Aug. 1931, daughter of James and Mary Littlefield. Had son, Hollis.
11c)Byron Murat Westcott b 8 Dec. 1847; d 5 Sept. 1879; married 21 Dec. 1869 to Harriet Maria Murphy b 24 Feb. 1847; d 25 April 1925, daughter of Henry Stanton and Laura Ann (Fuller) Murphy of Dexter, NY. Children: Belle, George
11d)Nelson Lewis Westcott b Dexter NY 2 Nov. 1879; married 12 March 1878 to Sarah Elmina Murphy b 13 Sept. 1855; d 9 March 1930, sister of Harriet M. who married Byron M., brother of Nelson L. 11e)Edward Westcott b 2 Nov. 1845; d 1908/9; married Rose___. Soldier in the Rebellion.

4)Gardiner Westcott b 18 Sept. 1770 and d 29 Aug. 1853; married Hannah Baker who was born 1771 and d 15 April 1860, daughter of George Baker, 1731-May 20, 1811, from Ireland and settled at Schuyler, Herkimer Co., NY. Gardiner and Hannah and her father are buried in an abandoned cemetery near their home. Hannah, widow of Gardiner, deeded lands to Gardiner, Jr. and wife Mary Ann in 1856, and to Johnson and wife, Adah, then of Oxbow, Jeff. Co. in 1859. Their children: Elisha, Johnson, Gardiner, Jr., Laura, Sophia, Hannah, Sally, Axey. Son, Johnson Westcott b 1799, married Adah Nevins. In 1859 he was of Oxbow; 7 children: Spencer, Julia, Nancy, William, Helen, Edward and Henry.
