Petition to open probate by SEYMORE CHICK of Sangerfield, Oneida Co., NY, father of Edward Chick, who stated that Edward deceased on 6 July 1892, in Richland, Oswego Co., NY, without issue. Edward Chick died without a will. Petition dated 13 August 1892.

Within the file is a letter written to the probate court by Seymore Chick that states a cause of action was brought against the New York Central Hudson River Railroad Company for the alleged negligent killing of the said Edward Chick. An action was commenced in the Supreme Court against the NY Central Hudson River Railroad Co. by the writer's attorney, William H. Gilman, in the amount of $5,000 for the killing of Edward Chick. The action was brought previously to trial at a Circuit Court in Watertown on 1 May 1893, before a judge and jury, the result being a judgment of non-suit which led to the Supreme Court case. Gilman advised Seymore Chick to accept $450 offered by the railroad, to settle the case.
