1. JEREMIAH WINEGAR was born Feb. 27, 1781 in Amenia, Dutchess County, NY. He was the son of SAMUEL WINEGAR and SUSANNA THOMAS. Jeremiah moved to Herkimer County with his parents, and then alone to Brownville in 1799, the year General Brown began his settlement. When the dam across the Black River was being built in 1811 Jeremiah worked on the dam and Leah cooked for the men. They lived at first in a wood shanty on Fish Island until a frame home, the first in Dexter, was complete.
It is known that Jeremiah took part in the "Patriot Hunter's War" in 1838 at age 59. He was taken prisoner by British troops during the Battle of Windmill Point near Prescott, Canada. He was tried, with others, at a court-martial in Kingston, Ontario, sentenced to be executed, then pardoned. He returned to Dexter in 1839 and bought property along Black River Bay near Pillar Point. He lived out his life there dying in 1865. He is buried in Dexter along with his wife. Their gravestone is marked "First Settlers of Dexter".
He married
LEAH BURWELL, (parents unknown) in 1803. Their daughter, HANNAH, was born in 1805 and
was the first white child born in Brownville. They had ten more children.
