The federal census for Alexandria Township was taken by Benjamin Owens, Assistant Marshal.
There is a distinction made between “keep house” and “house keeper”; the first term suggests the wife of the head of the family. The second suggests a job or occupation.
Every effort was made to maintain the spelling of the names as presented. Only those names with question marks will be changed when supplied proof is provided.
The value of real estate was not included in this transcription; anyone who has an interest in that value can find that information in the census. Neither was the parentage of foreign birth included, or dwelling numbers or school information/literacy.
The marriage information included was for those marriages that occurred within the year. Births that occurred within the year were also included by month.
The effects of the Civil War, aside from the mention of disabled soldiers, is evident by the number of households whose head was a female. Also apparent is the number of second marriages by women who brought their children from a first marriage with them to the second household.
Although this transcript includes only one township, it provides a wealth of information about changes in communities after the Civil War and how economics began to change societal dynamics.
