JEFFERSON COUNTY NEW YORK

PIONEER ASPINWALL FAMILY

1.SALMON ASPINWALL, the son of Eleazor ASPINWALL and Elizabeth STEELE was born in Norfolk, Litchfield Co., in the northwest corner of Connecticut, 10 Jun 1783. By 1804 he was living in Pawlet, Rutland Co., in the southwest part of Vermont, some 100 miles north of Norfolk. MARY MONTAGUE had been born in Pawlet in 1784. They married there in 1805 and had two children in Pawlet by 1810.

By 1812 they were in Rupert, Vermont, five miles southwest of Pawlet. They had three more children there, and in late 1817 or 1818, moved to Henderson, New York, probably taking with them the parents of MARY, ADONIJAH and MARY (SIMONDS) MONTAGUE. Henderson (150 miles west-northwest of Rupert) was probably a trip of some 200 miles across the breadth of upstate New York to the eastern shores of Lake Ontario. Their youngest child was born there in 1822 and they remained there the rest of their lives, with both SALMON and MARY dying in Henderson in 1856.

According to the census, they resided 3 Aug 1850 in Henderson, Jefferson Co., New York where his occupation at that time was Blacksmith.

An account of ASPINWALL ancestors who were born, married, lived or died in Henderson, Jefferson County, New York: ADONIJAH MONTAGUE was born 1757 in Sunderland, Mass., and MARY SIMONDS was born 1752 in Ware, Mass. They married in Pawlet, Vermont, in 1778 and daughter Mary was born 1784, probably in Pawlet. SALMON ASPINWALLl, born in 1783 in Norfolk, Conn., married MARY MONTAGUE in Pawlet in 1805. Two children, MARY CELINDA and DELATUS MILES ASPINWALL, were born in Pawlet by 1810. Three more children were born in Rupert, Vermont, not far from Pawlet.

About 1817-1818, Salmon moved his family to Jefferson County, New York, where a son was born in 1822. It's possible, perhaps even likely, that Mary's parents, Adonijah and Mary (Simonds) Montague, migrated with them, as they both died in Henderson, Jefferson County, New York; Adonijah in 1828 and Mary in 1831. Salmon and Mary (Montague) Aspinwall also lived out their lives in Henderson, dying there in the 1850's.

Meanwhile, OLIVER BATES and REBECCA HART were married in Shelburne, Mass., in 1782. Their son, CYRUS BATES, was born 1792 in Halifax, Vermont. Also born in Halifax, in 1795, was Lydia Harrington, daughter of Daniel and Sarah (Carpenter) Harrington. In 1813, Cyrus Bates married Lydia Harrington, not in Halifax, but in Henderson, New York. How Cyrus got to Henderson is not known, but at least his father accompanied or followed him as Oliver Bates died in Henderson in 1828. Whether Cyrus' mother, Rebecca (Hart) Bates, accompanied Oliver is unknown. How Lydia Harrington came to be in Henderson is not known, either. Her father apparently died in Halifax, Vermont, but the date is not known. Perhaps her widowed mother moved to Henderson about the same time as the Bates family. Perhaps a lot of things.

Six years after Cyrus and Lydia married in Henderson, daughter Lovina Arminda Bates was born there (1819). Delatus Aspinwall, by then a boy of nine, had been in Henderson for two years with his family. In 1840, he and Lovina were married in Henderson, where they had children Emma, Mary and William. In 1846 they migrated to Farmington, Wisconsin, where more children were born, including Ashley M. Aspinwall.

Thus we have in Henderson, Jefferson County, New York: Adonijah Montague perhaps arrived by 1818, died there 1828; Mary (Simonds) Montague perhaps arrived by 1818, died there 1831; Oliver Bates probably arrived by 1813, died there 1828; possibly Rebecca (Hart) Bates also arrived by 1813 and lived there with Oliver, perhaps she died there; Cyrus Bates married 1813 in Henderson, died there 1839; Lydia (Harrington) Bates married Cyrus there 1813, marriedagain in Henderson 1841, then left town; Salmon Aspinwall arrived about 1818, died there 1856; Mary (Montague) Aspinwall arrived about 1818, died there 1850; Delatus Aspinwall accompanied his parents to town about 1818, married 1840, departed for Wisconsin 1846; Lovina Arminda (Bates) Aspinwall was born in Henderson 1819, married there in 1840, left for Wisconsin 1846.

One mile west of Henderson, near Henderson Harbor, in the eastern reaches of Lake Ontario, is a locale named "Aspinwall Corners." It's likely that Salmon Aspinwall settled in that area, probably as a farmer. Perhaps other Aspinwalls, not yet known of, arrived there before Salmon and enticed him to the area. SALMON died 4 May 1856 in Henderson, Jefferson Co., New York
