ASA BARNES PIONEER FAMILY



1. ASA BARNES, Deacon, (James5, John4, Jacob3, Joseph2, Thomas1) was born 20 Oct 1781 in Farmington, Hartford Co., Connecticut. He was the son of JAMES BARNES and SARAH DICKINSON .

Deacon ASA died 7 Dec 1850 in LeRay, Jefferson Co., New York, and was buried 1850 in Evans Mills Cemetery, LeRay, Jefferson Co., NY.

NOTES: Asa Barnes of Florence, NY wrote a letter to Gerrit Smith on 29 Nov 1823 regarding 190 acres of land for the erection of a schoolhouse in Florence. Asa Barnes of Florence, NY wrote to Gerrit Smith on 12 Mar 1826 regarding the house site for the First Religious Society of Florence, requesting a certain section of land. Rec'd into Evans Mills Presbyterian Church from New York Mills Apr. 15, 1833. Fraternally Asa Barnes was a Mason.

RHODA COBURN who was the daughter of ZEBEDIAH COBURN, Jr. and LUNA KENDALL . RHODA died 25 Jan 1862 in Watertown, Jefferson Co., New York, and was buried 1862 in Evans Mills Cemetery, LeRay, Jefferson Co., NY.

NOTES for Rhoda: A letter from the Flower Memorial Library, dated 1 Nov 1994 states, "In the REFORMER, January 30, 1862, Mrs. Rhoda Barnes, age 80 died in Watertown 25 Jan 1862. She was the widow of the late Asa Barnes of LeRay." The US Census Records of 1860 show Rhoda Barnes living in the household with her daughter Candace Parker in Watertown, Jefferson, NY. (Film #0803762, pp 704 and 705; Dwelling #1232; Family #1194; Daniel Parker, age 46; Candance Parker, age 45 and Rhoda Barnes, age 77. Birth place of Rhoda in census is unclear but appears to state CT?).

5          iv      PAMELIA BARNES , born about 1809. PAMELIA married THOMAS FILER.

6           v     ELIZA MARIA BARNES , born 28 Mar 1811, died 5 Sep 1905 in Ottawa, Franklin, KS. ELIZA married CLINTON GILBERT TAYLOR.

7           vi      RANDALL BARNES , born 18 Apr 1813, died 6 Sep 1879 (A Jefferson County Pioneer - Continued below).

8           vii     CANDACE BARNES, born about 1815 in New York. She married DANIEL PARKER . He was born 1814 and was from Brownville, Jefferson Co., New York. He was the son of ALEXANDER DANIEL PARKER and BETSEY BARTHOLOMEW. DANIEL died 1 Sep 1876 in Brownville, Jefferson Co., New York, and was buried in Dexter Cemetery. Notes for DANIEL: He was a miller. 1860 Census indicated DANIEL was a farmer and had a value of $7,600. and $900. Source 6 states DANIEL was 61 years and 9 months at time of death.

He was the son of Alexander Daniel PARKER and Betsey BARTHOLOMEW. Daniel died 1 Sep 1876 in Brownville, Jefferson Co., New York, and was buried in Dexter Cemetery. 12           xi     WEALTHY ANN C. BARNES , died 11 Dec 1838, and was buried in Evans Mills Cemetery, LeRay, Jefferson Co., New York.

13           xii     Theresa BARNES . She married Foster FERRIN. Theresa and her son are buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, Colorado Springs, Colorado.   

  


7. RANDALL BARNES (Asa, Deacon6, James5, John4, Jacob3, Joseph2, Thomas1) was born 18 Apr 1813 in Oneida Co., New York, the son of Deacon ASA BARNES and RHODA COBURN . RANDALL died 6 Sep 1879 in Watertown, Jefferson Co., New York, and was buried in Evans Mills Cemetery, LeRay, Jefferson Co., NY.

He married (1) MARY ANN WOODRUFF . She was born 7 May 1819 in Oswego Co., New York. She was the daughter of AMOS WOODRUFF, Jr. and MATILDA RICE. MARY died 16 Dec 1867 in LeRay, Jefferson Co., New York, and was buried in Evans Mills Cemetery, LeRay, Jefferson Co., NY.

NOTES for Randall: Census of 1860 show Matilda Woodworth, age 60, born Vermont, residing in Randall's household. Real Estate Value $9,250. Personal Value $3,000. In 1865 resided in 2nd ED, LeRay, Jefferson, NY.

  20           vii     ASA RANDALL BARNES , born 20 Aug 1858, died 21Oct 1926. ASA married ELIZABETH COOLEY MUNRO.

  21           viii     ANNA WOODRUFF BARNES , born 6 Apr 1861 in New York, died 1900, and was buried in Evans Mills Cemetery, LeRay, Jefferson Co., New York. ANN W. is listed as a child of age 14, residing in LeRay, in her father's Probate Record. 1865 NY State Census Index shows Anna, age 4. The US Census record of 1880 shows A. 9. GERRIT SMITH BARNES (Asa, Deacon6, James5, John4, Jacob3, Joseph2, Thomas1) was born 27 Nov 1818 in Florence, Oneida Co., New York. He was the son of Deacon ASA BARNES and RHODA. GERRIT died 3 Sep 1898 in Colorado Springs, El Paso Co., Colorado, and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Colorado Springs, El Paso, CO.

Notes for Gerritt: Gerritt lived in LeRay, Oneida, NY 1829-1836; Cortland, Oneida, NY 1836-1840 (Homer Academy); Syracuse, Onondaga, NY 1841-1847; LeRay, Jefferson NY 1847-1854; Horicon, Dodge, WI 1854-1873; Colorado Springs, El Paso, CO 1873 until death. In 1875 G.S. Barnes was listed in Colorado Springs, ElPaso County, Colorado as a Town Trustee. He was also listed, business advertisement: Agricultural Implements and Hardware (Cascade Avenue). In 1885 his address was 317 North Wahsatch, Colorado Springs, CO. Gerritt was Mayor of Colorado Springs in 1886. He owned and operated hardware stores in Horicon, Dodge, Wisconsin & Colorado Springs, El Paso, CO. The Colorado Springs store, G.S. Barnes & Son, was established in Colorado Springs in 1873. The store had been located at 17 S. Tejon with a warehouse at 400 S. Wahsatch Avenue and later at 111 E. Pike's Peak Avenue. A Hardware and Sporting Goods store continued to operate by survivors in Colorado Springs under the name of J.P. Barnes Hardware Company as late as 1913. *Source #10: "Among the early businesses in the village (Horicon) not already mentioned was. . . . G.S. & R. Barnes' hardware store, and H.B. Marsh's livery stable.

He married MARIA ELIZA PIERCE 25 Feb 1846 in Syracuse, Onondaga Co., New York. She was born 28 Feb 1828 in Sangerfield, Oneida Co., New York. She was the daughter of JAMES PIERCE and LUCY M. BARNES. MARIA died 22 Apr 1911 in Colorado Springs, El Paso Co., Colorado, and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Colorado Springs, CO (Lot 39).

Notes for Maria Eliza Pierce: In 1900 Maria is head of the houshold at 317 E. Kiowa, Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Colorado. Living with her are daughter Etta, Grandson Maurice H. Barnes, daughter Lucy, and Grandaughter Jessie F. Barnes. 317 E. Kiowa was Maria's address listed in the Colorado Springs, CO City Directories through 1911. Maria died at her home from Arterio Sclerosis, complicated by senility .

11. MARIA E. BARNES, (Asa, Deacon6, James5, John4, Jacob3, Joseph2, Thomas1) was born about 1820 in New York. She was the daughter of Deacon ASA BARNES and RHODA COBURN.

She married JOHN ELMORE . He was born about 1819 in New Hampshire.

  30           ii      SARAH ELMORE , born about 1845 in New York.

  31           iii      Mary ELMORE , born about 1847 in New York.

NOTES for JOHN: Next door to John in the 1850 US Census in Theresa there was: Hial Elmore, age 29, born NH; Mary A. Elmore, age 27, born NY; Melista Elmore, age 8, born NY; and Alonzo Elmore, age 6, born NY. Probably Hial was a brother of John. John's profession was a tinsmith.

NOTES for MARIA: Census report indicates Maria to be age 30 in 1850. Prior record indicated that she was born in 1828. Asa Barnes’ Probate Records state, "Maria of Theresa, NY."
