purist Jefferson County Civil War history. There are some fine Lewis, St

Lucas, Roger. BOLDT'S BOATS. Tracing the history of each of Mr. Boldt's boats, it shows a picture of each, where available, and mentions the people responsible for their care.
Lucas, Roger. BOLDT CASTLE--HEART ISLAND. Copiously illustrated, like the other Lucas books, mentions many members of the huge Boldt staff, mostly of local people.
Lucas, Roger. WELLESLEY ISLAND FARMS. A book in progress, after the same pattern as the previous two mentioned. A surname list of all the books will be available.
Nesbit, Rosemary. THE GREAT ROPE. Primarily a book for the Junior High crowd, it is the story of a great feat of manpower during the War of 1812, and relates an historical event in an easy to follow manner. Illustrated, with a fictional story following the historical facts. Great for background on the entire Lake Ontario shore of Jefferson County. $12.95
NEW TOPOGRAPHICAL ATLAS OF JEFFERSON CO New York from actual surveys by S.N. and D.G. Beers and Assistants. C.K. Stone. 1864. 41 pages. At approximately 16 by 16 inches, each town has its own map, which shows the name of every resident. Villages and the city of Watertown each have their own maps, also showing the names of residents in 1864. Scale varies from one to one and a half inches to the mile. This is available, in slightly smaller size, as a reprint from A Second Look at $14.95.
Powell, Thomas. PENET'S SQUARE. Hundred square mile tract comprising much of the Town of Orleans, and some of the Town of Clayton, given by the Oneida Indians to Pierre Penet. Good local history, both white and Indian. 205 pages, cloth, $9.95. Order from A Second Look, above.
Sinclair, Ronald E. THE HISTORY OF THERESA. 1980. Reprint published by Four River Valleys Historical Society 1993. $16.95. Thomas, Howard. BLACK RIVER IN THE NORTH COUNTRY. 1985. 213 pages. $9.95. This book covers the entire Black River Valley, but has especial emphasis on Watertown, the only city on the Black River. The valley, not the river, was an important avenue for the early settlers of Jefferson County.
Wilder, Patrick. SEAWAY TRAIL GUIDEBOOK to the War of 1812. Michael Wilder, illus. Authorized by the St Lawrence - Eastern Ontario Commission. This book covers more than Jefferson County's contribution to the War of 1812, giving also the Canadian viewpoint.
In 2 vols, North and South halves of the county. Provides a short history of Jefferson County,
as well as a brief description to introduce each town.

Of first importance to the seeker of family background in Jefferson County are the various county histories:
Child, Hamilton: GAZETTEER OF JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. 1684-1890. Bound in one volume, but divided into two parts: Geographical Gazetteer, which includes the history, early settlers, and biographies of selected families of each town in the county, 887 pages. Part two is a business directory of Jefferson County in 1890, 345 pages. Published in 1890, with an index to the biographies, and photographs of leading citizens.Coughlin, Jere.: JEFFERSON COUNTY CENTENNIAL 1905. Published by Hungerford-Holbrook Co., Watertown, N.Y., 1905. 440 pages. This book is chock full of genealogical data organized by town.
Emerson, Edgar C. OUR COUNTY AND ITS PEOPLE. 1898. Laid out on the same general principles as Child's Gazetteer, Emerson provides history of each township as well as an overview of Jefferson County, a section on biographies of various families, and personal references. Illustrated, 936 plus 318 pages, indexed.
Evarts, L.H. & Co. HISTORY OF JEFFERSON COUNTY, 1797-1878. A "glory book", like the previous, it provides town histories, with many biographies. This county history is more lavishly illustrated with photographs not only of the people, but of their houses and farms. It provides a history of Jefferson County in the Civil War, including rosters of various regiments.

Published in 1854. 601 pages. A myriad of information on the towns, their histories, newspapers, biographical information, etc. Index in separate volume.

Litchman, William M. AN EVERY-NAME INDEX FOR AGRICULTURAL SCHEDULES, INDUSTRY OTHER THAN AGRICULTURE SCHEDULES, MARRIAGES, DEATH, AND CIVIL WAR SOLDIER DEATHS IN THE 1865 NEW YORK STATE CENSUS FOR JEFFERSON COUNTY, 1996, 218 pages. This index has a lot of information. If farming, gives surname, given name, township, election district, page #. Marriages, gives bride, or groom, age, spouse, and their age, date of marriage, township, page #. Death, gives surname, given name, date of death, township, and page #. One of the more helpful books I have, and this man is publishing more to come on Jefferson Co.
