PIONEER BOWERS FAMILY



1. ZACHARIAH BOWERS was born c1802 in either NY or MA. They are on the 1825 Cape Vincent, Jeff Co. census. However the name BOWERS looks like BOWEN/BOWENS. Their children were all born in Lyme, Jefferson Co., NY. This family along with Adeline's sister, MARY ANN HUBBARD and husband, WILLIAM KING DODGE moved to Wisconsin in 1844. Zachariah was at Waukesha Co. WI, then moved to Roxbury, Dane Co., in 1848. The next year Zachariah went to the Gold Rush when about 47 yrs. old. He had accumulated some money as a gold quartz wagon driver and had decided to return home but was robbed and murdered in San Francisco about 1853. He is briefly mentioned in the book "In Camp and Cabin" by Rev. John Steele who visited him at his mining camp at Deer Creek next to Nevada, Nevada Co., CA Dec. 1850. Many young Bowers and Hubbard men are listed on the 1850 CA census in the gold country.

He married about 1831
ADELINE HUBBARD, who was born 1808 at Brownville, Jeff. Co., NY. She was the daughter of ABNER & CATHERINE (WEBSTER) HUBBARD. After her husband's death, Adeline lived with dau. Cornelia Reynolds and d. 1885 Roxbury, Dane Co. WI.
