He was blind for many years, and finally had to give up farming, and he and Martha went to live with their son Joseph and his wife Fanny, on a farm near Smithville. On 21 August 1832, Benjamin Cole, then residing in Jefferson County, NY, made application in the Town of Adams for a pension based on his service performed in the Revolutionary War. He died on 26 Oct 1839 in Adams. He is apparently buried in Hebron, Washington Co., NY, however, or possibly a stone was erected in his memory when his wife died there some two years later. No grave marker is found for him in Jefferson County. The Washington County, NY markers for Benjamin and his wife are in the Grimes Hill (Smith) Cemetery, north of Hebron.
