PIONEER COUNTRYMAN FAMILY



1. HENRY COUNTRYMAN was born in the town of Danube, Herkimer Co on 7 March 1797, son of George and Rabena Countryman. Henry came to Jefferson Co. in May of 1823. Rabena was the sister of Robert Spraker who at one time was president of the New York Central Railroad. Henry remained a member of his father's family until moving to Jefferson County. On arrival in Jefferson, he purchased less than two acres of land at Pamelia Four Corners where he first located. Eventually his farm included 600 acres of land. Henry died on 16 June 1875.

  He married on 19 October 1819,
ELIZABETH WALRATH of [Pamelia] Four Corners. They had five boys and four girls, as follows:

CHILDREN, COUNTRYMAN:

2        i   ALEXANDER COUNTRYMAN was born in Herkimer Co on 9 July 1820 and came to Jefferson Co. at age three with his parents. He was a continued resident of Pamelia Four Corners and was associated with his brother, GEORGE H. in the carriage making business. ALEXANDER married CATHERINE SMITH, daughter of SELAH and CATHERINE SMITH, one of the old Pamelia families.

3        ii      CATHERINE COUNTRYMAN was born 22 March 1823 and married SAMUEL ZULLER of Pamelia.

4          iii      GEORGE H. COUNTRYMAN was born 1 Jan 1826 and went inro the carriage making business with brother, ALEXANDER. He married LOUISA MILLS, daughter of ANSEL and BETSEY MILLS, who were among the first settlers of the town. LOUISA died in 1858 and he married 2) OLIVE EDDY.

5          iv      LOUISA COUNTRYMAN was born 13 Nov 1829 and was the wife of ABRAM ZULLER, a farmer of St. Lawrence Co.

6           v     LUDENTIA COUNTRYMAN was born 22 Sept 1831

7           vi     LUCY E. COUNTRYMAN was born 21 Aug 1831, married JOSEPH BAUM, merchant of Potsdam NY.

8           vii      AMOS B. COUNTRYMAN was born 3 April 1838.

9          viii      WILSON H. COUNTRYMAN was born 15 Aug 1840

10            ix     OSCAR COUNTRYMAN was born 7 Sept 1843, deceased.
