PIONEER DYER FAMILY

Generation 1

Captain CHARLES DYER was born 4 July 1753 in North Kingstown, Washington RI and died 27 October 1845 in Shaftsbury, Bennington VT at 92 years, 3 months, 17 days. Capt. Dyer is listed in the DAR Patriot Index, his service was in Rhode Island as a Captain in the Continental Line and a Major in the Rhode Island Militia.

He married on 20 Sept 1777 in North Kingstown, Washington RI SUSANNAH WRIGHT, born 23 April 1762 in North Kingstown. She was the daughter of PETER WRIGHT and ELIZABETH BAKER.

It is from a pension abstract, from the soldier's son, ISAAC DYER of Bennington VT, who applied there on 7 Sept. 1846 that the following information was presented:

Upon the death of Capt. Charles Dyer in 1845, he left the following children:

  1. ISAAC DYER born 4 April 1793 in Vermont; married MARIA or AURILLA HENDERSON, who was born 1797 in Vermont. This son applied for his father's pension.
  2. BENJAMIN DYER; born 16 Feb 1779 Kingston, Washington RI; d 21 Jan 1855 Shaftsbury, Gennington VT; married MARY CLARK b 30 April 1778; died 20 May 1831
  3. FRANKLIN DYER
  4. SUSAN DYER, wife of SETH SPENCER; born 22 Jan 1788 in Shaftsbury, Bennington VT and died 1870. Seth Spencer was born 1780 and died 1853.
  5. FREELOVE DYER, wife of JAMES SLY (children 1-5 all of Shaftsbury) born 9 Oct. 1789 and resided in Shftsbury.
  6. PETER W. DYER of Rodman, Jefferson Co NY; born 12 Oct. 1796 in Vermont and died 4 Sept. 1862 in Michigan. He married
    1. NANCY FARNHAM on 7 Sept 1818 in Richfield, Otsego Co NY; she was born 27 may 1798 and died 13 April 1823 in NY.
    2. AURILLA MATTESON who was born 2 Sept 1797 in Shaftsbury, VT and died 15 Mar 1879 in Keller, Van Buren Co MI.
  7. SAMUEL DYER of Rodman, Jefferson Co NY, born 10 Mar. 1786 and died 2 Aug. 1847 in Rodman, Jefferson Co NY. He may have lived for a brief time in Burlington, Otsego Co NY. Upon his arrival in Jefferson Co., he opened a store near Rodman. He married on 13 April 1806 in Shafstbury VT to PRUDENCE ACKLEY, who was born 17 Oct. 1781 and died 31 Aug. 1866 probably in Jefferson Co NY; grave not found. Samuel Dyer is buried in Jefferson Co.
  8. SARAH DYER, widow of HENRY TILLINGHAST; born 5 Jan 1781 and lived in Rodman, Jefferson Co NY; she died after 1846
  9. ABIGAIL DYER, wife of WILLIAM HOWLETTE of Herkimer Co., NY; born 29 Dec. 1792 in Rhode Island and died after 1846. Frank Dyer states the Bennington VT Museum has her birthdate as 26 July 1791 so the date given first may be a baptismal date. They resided in Herkimer Co NY
  10. ELIZABETH DYER, widow of DAVID SUNDERLAND of Herkimer Co NY; born 12 Jan 1801 and died after 1846; married David Sunderland in Oct. of 1817
  11. WILLIAM DYER of Hanover, Shelby Co IN; born 26 June 1782; lived Hanover, Shelby IN and died after 1846; married ARVILLA COLE
  12. CHARLES DYER of Burlington, Racine Co WI.; born 6 May 1784; married MARY GALUSHA on 8 July 1804
  13. JOHN DYER born 9 May 1798; died 13 Dec. 1823; married AURILLA MATTESON on 28 Sept 1817 in VT; she was born 2 Sept. 1797 in Shaftsbury. Upon John Dyer's death, his second wife, Aurilla, married his brother Peter.
  14. DIANTHA DYER born 23 Feb. 1803; married DANIEL SHERWOOD
  15. FRANKLIN DYER born 19 Nov. 1804 in Shaftsbury; married JANETTE TIBBITS on 10 Jan. 1827. She was born 1805 and died in NY.

SAMUEL DYER, son of CHARLES DYER & SUSANNAH WRIGHT, was born 10 Mar. 1786 and died 2 Aug. 1847 in Rodman, Jefferson Co NY. He may have lived for a brief time in Burlington, Otsego Co NY. Upon his arrival in Jefferson Co., he opened a store near Rodman. Samuel Dyer is buried in Jefferson Co. He married on 13 April 1806 in Shafstbury VT PRUDENCE ACKLEY, who was born 17 Oct. 1781 and died 31 Aug. 1866 probably in Jefferson Co NY; grave not found.

PETER W. DYER was born 13 Jan. 1820, son of John Dyer and Aurilla Matteson; Peter died on 31 May 1897 in Adams Center at age 77 yrs 4 mos 18 days. On 5 May 1844, he married SUSAN ARVILLA DYER, daughter of Samuel Dyer and Prudence Ackley. Susan was born 22 Aug. 1820 and died 9 Mar. 1886 in Adams Center, Jefferson Co at 65 years yrs 6 m 17 days

  1. MARY ANTOINETTE DYER; born 2 April 1845 in Rodman, Jefferson Co and died 4 May 1898 in Adams Center at 53 yrs.

  3. HENRIETTA A. DYER born 16 Feb 1853 in Rodman and died 7 Mar. 1924 in Sacketts Habor, Jefferson Co. at 71 yrs.
  4. JOHN S. DYER was born 17 June 1854 and died 20 June 1854
  5. CHARLES F. DYER was born 28 July 1857 in Rodman and died 12 May 1925 at 67 years. He married on 21 June 1883 to CARRIE C. DEVENDORT, daughter of SOLOMON and MARY (BASSETT) DEVENDORT of Adams Centre, Jefferson Co. NY.
  6. FRED ADELBERT DYER was born 22 June 1864 in Adams Center, Jefferson Co.
