Very little is known of Phebe's 1st marriage. She and Ephraim owned property in Jefferson Co., N. Y. They started the overland trek to Oregon, and while in Missouri, they sold some of their N. Y. property. Record books show the following: 76-498: Ephraim Grimes & Phebe, his wife, Union Co., Mo.: to Phineas Hardy of the Town of LeRay, Jefferson Co., N. Y., property in the Town of Antwerp, Jefferson Co., N. Y. Ack. May 1, 1845, Jefferson Co., N. Y. 76-499: March 11, 1845, Ephraim Grimes & Phebe, his wife, to Paul Anthony, Town of LeRay, Jefferson Co., N. Y., property, Philadelphia, N. Y. Rec. & Ack. May 1, 1845.
Ephraim died in Apr. 1845. Phebe arrived in Portland, Ore., in the fall of 1847, and the following spring, she was visited by her nephew, Henry Welch Eddy (see index and 1930 book, p. 468, no. 3290), who went to Oregon to stay with his Aunt Phebe.
Further N. Y. records, having to do with the Estate of Ephraim Grimes, are dated Dec. 8, 1851; Jude Cross, Champion, Jefferson Co., N. Y., and Willard L. Eddy, Pamelia, Jefferson Co., N. Y., Administrators, to Samuel Hall, Antwerp, Jefferson Co., property in Town of Antwerp. Letters to administrate the estate were duly granted by the Surrogate of Jefferson Co. to the said Jude Cross and Willard L. Eddy (see index, and 1930 book, p. 190, no. 1583), who legally settled the estate. Also mentioned were Willard Grimes and Philander Grimes, probably sons of Ephraim and Phebe (Eddy) Grimes.
