JEFFERSON COUNTY, NEW YORK

PIONEER ELLIS FAMILY

1. JOHN ELLIS, son of JOHN and MARY (MARTIN) (HORTON) ELLIS was born in Rehoboth , Mass.1753, although The DAR have him b. in 1754. My calculation is based on the death date given on the old tombstone in Rutland Hollow Cem. He d. Mar. 13 , 1827 at 73 yrs. of age. Had he made his birthday in April of that year he would have been 74. When you subtract 74 from 1827 the birth yr. then would have been 1753.

John and Rachel along with their two youngest children Calvin (my ancestor ) and Mary moved just prior to 1820, as John is on the 1820 census for Rutland. His old farm is located north up the hill from the Rutland Hollow cem. to the 1st left (west) about a couple of miles. If I remember it was lot 9. They had removed from Buckland, Mass. to Rutland, N.Y. The story of me finding John’s old tombstone in the overgrown cem. back in 1995 istoo long to relate here. Suffice is to say that with the help of the Rutland historian of the day we were able to have the cemetery partly cleaned up. I have gotten really lucky these past few years, as a man by the name of Mike Hinckley who is interested in cleaning up abandonded cemeteries has taken quite an interest in the Rutland Hollow Cemetery. He has made a monumental improvement in the cemetery.

John was in the Richmond, New Hampshire Militia under Oliver Capron and placed under Ephraim Doolittle’s Regiment at Bunker Hill. He was also at Bennington and Stillwater. He was also at Ticonderoga. This acc. to Roger Hunt and the N h. state papers Also in Basset’s history of Richmond New Hampshire.
