PIONEER FAMILY of ELIJAH FIELD



1. ELIJAH FIELD was born 20 April 1756 and married on 26 Jan. 1774 to TAMISON CRANE, daughter of HEZEKIAH CRANE of Mansfield, CT. Elijah Field was the son of BENNETT AND ELIZABETH (SPAFFORD) FIELD, born in Mansfield CT. Elijah settled in 1774 in Woodstock, VT and in 1806 he removed with his whole family to Hounsfield, Jefferson Co NY where he died in October of 1828 at 74 years, and is buried in the Field Settlement Cemetery. His location became known as the Field Settlement. Elijah served in the Revolutionary War as a drummer from Vermont and is listed in the DAR Patriot Index. Elijah and Tamison were the parents of 12 children, some of whom were married when they settled in Jefferson County. The Field settlement in Watertown was in the west part of the town that adjoined Hounsfield.

Children of Elijah Field and Tamison Crane:

2          i HEZEKIAH FIELD born 3 Sept. 1774; died 1845 at 71 yrs and buried in Hounsfield. He married KETURAH or KATURA RANSOM who died 1858 at 83 years and is buried in Hounsfield.

3          ii ELIJAH FIELD born 15 June 1778 at Woodstock

4          iii PHILIP CRANE FIELD born 15 June 1778; born Woodstock; moved in 1806 to Hounsfield where he died 15 March 180.

5          iv LEBBEUS FIELD born 2 Feb. 1780 Woodstock, VT; became a minister and died 6 Sept 1879. He married 6 June 1803 to married EUNICE WARREN, daughter of SAMUEL AND ELIZABETH (SNOW)WARREN of Woodstock. She was born 12 Sept 1777 and died 25 July 1865 at 87 years 10 months. They resided in Hounsfield and are buried in the Brownville Cemetery.

6          v THADDEUS FIELD born 15 Nov. 1781; married CLARISSA NORTON; he born Woodstock V; moved to Hounsfield in 1806. Moved to Wisconsin where he died April 1859.

7          vi TAMSON FIELD born 23 Aug. 1783; married 1st a ROBINSON of Housfield and 2nd, BELGAR. She died 9 August 1840

8          vii FILANA FIELD born 27 August 1785; married 1st HENRY BROWN and 2nd GEORGE FRISBIE; she died 16 April 1864

9          viii HANNAH FIELD born 19 March 1787; married 1st THOMAS RANDALL and 2nd JESSE STONE of Pillar Point

10          ix ALPHEUS FIELD born 10 Feb 1789; married BETSEY WOOD. Rev. Alpheus Field was born in Woodstock VT and moved in 1806 to Hounsfield. He subsequently moved to Michigan where he died on 4 Feb 1861. He was a Methodist minister.

11          x SPAFFORD FIELD born 10 April 1790; married MARY HANNAH RESSAGUIE who died in 1813; and 2nd ALICE MOORE. Spafford was born in Woodstock, VT and moved to Hounsfield in 1806. Alice Moore was the daughter of ABRAM MOORE and she died 16 March 1859. In 1861, Spafford married 3rd to MRS. MARY BECKER and she died in 1873. Spafford died in 1870 at 80 years.

12          xi SAMUEL FIELD born 17 Jan 1793; married PHOEBE ALLEN. He moved with the family to Hounsfield in 1806 and died there 20 April 1843. He served through the War of 1812 as a drummer and was called "Major". Phoebe, his wife, was the daughter of EBENEZER AND PHOEBE (HEALEY) ALLEN of Hounsfield; she was born in 1828 and died in 1907; buried Brownville Cem.

13          xii BENNETT FIELD born 17 June 1795 in Woodstock, VT.; he also moved with the family to Jefferson Co in 1806 and in 1845 to Shabbona Grove in DeKalb Co, IL. He died there in October 1854. In 1817 he married FANNY WAITE, daughter of JOHN AND HILDAH WAITE, born Rindge, NH in 1798 and died 1871 in Shabbona, IL.

JUDGE ELIJAH FIELD, son of ELIJAH FIELD, was born in Woodstock, VT on 2 Feb 1776 and settled first in Ballstown, NY; in 1810 he moved to Sacket Harbor in Jefferson Co., NY where he died 6 Feb 1867 at 91 years. He was a postmaster at Sacket Harbor from 1812 to 1821; judge of Jefferson County for several years and took an active part in the War of 1812. In 1798 he married ESTHER BUTLER of New Bedford MA who was born 9 Dec 1772 and died 8 Feb. 1850. They resided at Sackett's Harbor.

2          i 1) LAURA FIELD born 15 May 1799 and married DAVID MILLINGTON of Sacket Harbor

2          i 2) ALANSON FIELD born 27 Jan. 1801; married HARRIET GOODRICH

2          i 3) THOMAS JEFFERSON FIELD born 5 Feb 1812; he was a volunteer officer in the Florida War; died 6 May 1837 while on a voyage to the East Indies and was buried on Madagascar.
