Child's Gazetteer for Jefferson County

Note:
This project has only been made possible through the efforts of several volunteers, directed by Shirley Farone, who has been a behind-the-scenes participant in this website from the very beginning. The original idea came from Sharon Patchett, who is also giving her time to the project. Sisters Marcia Alary and Barbara Britt, both of whom have been volunteering on other projects for the website, are also working on this, and the newest volunteer, Gary Roe, was one of the first to get his work in. We are grateful to each of them for making this material so easily available.

The folowing towns were available in 1997:

  1. ALEXANDRIA
  2. BROWNVILLE
  3. CLAYTON
  4. HOUNSFIELD
  5. LORRAINE
  6. ORLEANS
  7. WORTH

We are continuing to add towns. The following are the Child's added in January 1998. For a complete list of available Child's, use the click above.

We have added a table of the derivation of the towns to the file called "When is a Town not a Town?"

CHILD'S MAPS

Attached to the original Childs Gazetteer is a map of Jefferson County. This map is later than the 1864 Atlas which we have used for the various towns. It has no names. Instead, each road is numbered, and the numbers correspond to those given for locations in each individual biography. The map allows the user to find the general site, but does not pinpoint the location as does the 1864 Atlas.

For ease in downloading, we have divided the map into north and south portions, with enough overlap to insure that no one is left out. Despite this, and other efforts to make them more manageable, the maps still will take several minutes to download. They are comparable with the Town of Ellisburgh map. The northern portion is approximately 900k, while the southern portion is slightly smaller, at roughly 850k. We feel that these maps are a useful addition to the text, because the road numbers given in the gazetteer have been superseded by modern numbering.

November 1998

Our November feature has been trickling onto the page for months, but is now practically complete, except for an odd or end. The WebSite's Revolutionary Veterans of Jefferson County comprise any veterans who lived in the county at all in contrast to the DAR lists which have concentrated on those buried in the county. It includes information from several sources which are designataed on the main Revvet page. Many of the source clicks are a single letter. They are explained at the top of the Revvet page.

Lyme Heritage Center Family Files

We are fortunate to have a complete listing of the family files held by Lyme Heritage Center in Chaumont, Town of Lyme. They are being added to continually. This list was prepared by the staff of Lyme Heritage Center, and is up to date as of Dec 12. Some cautions in using the list: every surname is listed, but many have very little information, perhaps an obituary, or a wedding notice. On the other hand, someone may have donated a family group sheet or a complete family history. There is no guarantee that the person you are looking for, even though she has the same unusual surname listed, will appear in this family file.

Be prepared to pay copying and mailing costs. Lyme Heritage has NO governmental support. A small donation may hurry your request, but understand that members of the extremely small staff have many other calls on their time, so be patient and courteous. As always, those two virtues bring their own reward!
