PIONEER HEIL FAMILY



1. JOHANN PHILIPP HEIL was born circa 1778 in Gross-Zimmern, Hesse-Darmstadt. JOHANN PHILIPP HEIL immigrated to the United States, arriving in New York on September 1, 1832. Accompanying him were five of his children. One had died in Germany. The other, JOHANN PETER HEIL, had arrived one year earlier, on August 20, 1831, at Baltimore. All members of this family who immigrated settled in Jefferson County, New York.

He married
BARBARA HOTTES, born November 4, 1787 in Gross-Zimmern. She died in Gross-Zimmern November 15, 1822, after bearing seven children.

8. JOHANN WENDEL HEIL married KAROLINE CHRISTIANA BEAT BULLING

2. HEINRICH HEIL (HEYL) (son of JOHANN PHILIPP & BARBARA (HOTTES) HEIL) was born December 27, 1805, Gross-Zimmern, Hesse-Darmstadt. He changed the spelling of his name to Heyl. He died at Depauville circa 1879 and is buried in Depauville Cemetery.

Gravestone gives dates 1806-1878.

He married after arriving in Jefferson County
CATHERINE M. HELDT, who was also born in Germany in 1804 (Bartlett) and died 27 May 1880. She is buried in Depauville Cemetery with her husband.

3. JOHANN PETER HEIL (son of JOHANN PHILIPP & BARBARA (HOTTES) HEIL) was born January 26, 1808, Gross-Zimmern, Hesse-Darmstadt. He immigrated, arriving at Baltimore on August 20, 1831. He remarried twice, moved to Iowa, Kansas, and eventually to California where he died March 8, 1894 in Santa Ana.

He married in the Town of Orleans circa 1836
LOUISA FRIDERICA BEAT BULLING After moving to adjacent Lewis County, LOUISA died after giving birth to twins.

4. ANNA MARIA HEIL (daughter of JOHANN PHILIPP & BARBARA (HOTTES) HEIL) was born February 1, 1811, Gross-Zimmern, Hesse-Darmstadt. This family remained in Jefferson County, and ANNA MARIA died in LeRay on March 24, 1891. She was buried in the old Evans Mills Cemetery, with her husband.

She married in Jefferson County
BERNHARD STEINHILBER, who was an immigrant from Wuertemberg. His gravestone at Evans Mills: 1 Sep 1880, aged 68 years, 8 months, 5 days.

5. ANNA CATHARINA HEIL (daughter of JOHANN PHILIPP & BARBARA (HOTTES) HEIL) was born October 26, 1813, Gross-Zimmern, Hesse-Darmstadt. This family too remained in Jefferson County. She died there before 1901. Buried in the new Evans Mills Cemetery, her gravestone indicates 29 Oct 1813-12 Dec 1889.

She married in Jefferson County
EZEKIEL STEINHILBER, Bernhard's brother, was buried in Town of LeRay, in the new Evans Mills Cemetery. Gravestone: 26 Aug 1814-19 Oct 1867.

7. JOHANN GEORG HEIL (son of JOHANN PHILIPP & BARBARA (HOTTES) HEIL) was born August 3, 1818, Gross-Zimmern, Hesse-Darmstadt. They remained in the county where he died September 18, 1855 in LeRay. He was buried in the old Evans Mills Cemetery there.

He married in Jefferson County
JOHANNA FRIEDERIKA BULLING, a sister of Louisa who married Johann Peter Heil. She died 27 Mar 1875, and is buried in the old Evans Mills Cemetery.

He married in Jefferson County
KAROLINE CHRISTIANA BEATA BULLING, another Bulling sister. They had two children, born in LeRay, who died young.
