PIONEER McNITT FAMILY



1. JAMES McNITT, the son of ALEXANDER McNITT, was born about 1794-1804. He died 1827 in New York State.

He married about 1817 in New York State
SARAH LINDSEY, who was born 30 Sep 1800 at Ellisburgh, Jefferson County NY, and died 31 Dec 1883 Ellisburgh. She was the daughter of STEPHEN LINDSEY and SARAH McNITT.

3. SYLVESTOR McNITT, son of JAMES & SARAH (LINDSEY) McNITT, was born 27 Aug 1822 in Ellisburgh, Jefferson County, NY. Sylvestor remained in New York till he was 22 years old, when he removed to Kane Co. Illinois remaining there about 11 years when again he started west traveling with a team from Kane County ILL;., to Steele County Minn., being two months on the way, and landing in Clinton Falls Township June 24th 1855. He claimed government land on section 24 where he reamined from that time until 1882, when he moved into the city of Owatonna, where he lived. Mr. McNitt in the company of Abraham Barnhardt cut the first road from what is called East Prairie to Owatonna, the the winter of 1857, and made the first wagon-track from what was then called Elwood to the village of Clinton Falls, which is up to this day called the "old McNitt road" in Minnesota. He died 26 November, 1904 in Owatonna, Steele Co. MN

He married March 30th 1841 in Jefferson County NY

SUSAN SMITH, daughter of Oliver Smith (of Jefferson Co., NY) & Rebecca Van Patten.

10    v   Clara R McNitt b. @ 1855 Illinois married Jos Ring (of Medford, Minnesota)
