PIONEER SAMUEL NICHOLS FAMILY



1. SAMUEL NICHOLS was born October 1777 in Templeton, Mass, the son of SAMUEL NICHOLS and JANE WILEY. The family moved to Rodman, Jefferson Co NY and purchased land in 1813.

He married on February 12,1798 Presbyterian Church New Hartford, Oneida N.Y.

2. WILEY GILBERT NICHOLS, son of SAMUEL & HANNAH (GILBERTS) NICHOLS was born October 10,1802 at Templeton, MA Story has it that at the age of 19 Wiley Gilbert was at a 4th of July celebration in Sackets Harbor when a cannon failed to explode and when he went to check it; it exploded amputating both lower forearms. He was fitted with artificial limbs. Wiley was a lighthouse keeper at Stony Point Lighthouse, Henderson Harbor 1837-1869. Wiley was a horse trader and owned other land in the area. Wiley died in 1879.

HARRIET ROGERS, daughter of JOHN ROGERS & CHARRY BAIRD, Lowville. Harriet died in 1842.

9  viii    WILLIAM WILEY NICHOLS. 1842 - 1921, was raised by the Stevens family after his mother died. He married MARIA BUELL.. He had two other wives, LIVONIA THOMAS and (---)

 7.  JOHN SAMUEL NICHOLS, son of WILEY GILBERT NICHOLS & HARRIET ROGERS was born 1838 and died in 1885, leaving his wife Martha with 9 children. Apparently, after an auction to satisfy debts the family was destitute. Older children moved west, youngest was adopted and Dewitt Nichols put in the orphanage and left to work on the Jenny Mather farm near Adams at a young age. Martha died within a year.
