JEFFERSON COUNTY, NEW YORK

PIONEER FAMILY of ISAAC NILES

1. ISAAC NILES was born in 1780 in Colchester, CT. The earliest I find him in Jefferson County is 1820. He was living in Ellisburg. His name appears on the March, 1833 page of the book that catalogues animal markings for ownership purposes.

He was married twice. He appears in the 1830 census in Orleans. In 1820 there are 6 children listed in Isaac's home. His wife had at least 3 more children in the early/mid 1820s. Isaac's second wife was THANKFUL HARDING (1791-1865). Thankful and Isaac were divorced in the 1830s and she moved on to Ohio and married again. By 1840, Isaac was in Oswego County. He died there early in 1843.

There are 5 children of Isaac identified so far: Ralph (1817), Jane (1820-1888), Mrs. Thomas Evans, Chauncey and Peter. After Isaac died, Ralph, Jane and Chauncey moved to the Erie County, Ohio area. Chauncey married Maria Fitts in 1846 and Jane married Leonard Bacon in 1835 in Clayton, N.Y.
