PIONEER SETTLER WILLIAM PATTISON
WILLIAM PATTISON was born about 1794 in Dutchess Co. NY and was living in Yonge, Canada in 1821, where he married ELIZABETH LAY on 25 January 1821. By 1824, he was living in Alexandria Bay and also was named on the 1830, 1840 census. In the 1850 census he is listed there with Elizabeth. She was born about 1799 in Canada. Also in the household was JANE, age 15, born Canada. By the 1855 census only William and Elizabeth were in the household; that he had been a resident for 31 years and was born in Dutchess Co., NY, which places him in Jefferson County about 1824.
In the 1830 census of Alexandria, in addition to William, were IRA PATTISON, CRUTH PATTISON and JARRY PATTISON. MARY PATTISON, who was bc 1775, died in 1831 at 56 years and is buried in the Riverside Cemetery on Wells Island. Also buried there is EDWARD PATTISON who died in 1832 at 19 years. For unknown reasons, William Pattison decided to buy property on Wells Island, which he did twice. The first purchase was made on 12 October 1849 and recorded on 3 January 1850. He bought 18 acres for $100 from LYMAN W. WALTON, ANDREW CORNWELL and wife MARY of Alexandria Bay. His second purchased was made on 2 December 1851 and recorded 23 December 1857. The sellers were LYMAN WALTON, AZARIAH WALTON and wife MARY and ANDREW CORNWELL and wife, MARY.
In the following probate estate matters for William, some relationships within the Pattison family are found. The surname spelling of Pattison becomes Patterson in many of the documents and deeds but the original spelling as William wrote it was Pattison.
