EXPLANATION OF ABBREVIATIONS
USED ON THE POSTMASTER PAGES OF VARIOUS TOWNS


These explanations were sent to us by Ed Lee of the Historical Association of South Jefferson several years ago. Without input from knowledgable people like Ed and his capable wife Shirley, many of us would remain in the dark. Ed noted: This information came from GSA, Washington, D.C. #61-1534, and furnished to us by Carol Porter, Post Master of the Ellisburg post office.

ABBREVIATIONMEANING
Dis discontinued
Reest reestablished
Ch'g'd or changed the name of the post office was changed or its site was moved to another county
Now in post office has been changed to another county. Very rarely is the exact date given
(P) appointed by the president
(P & S) appointed by the president and confirmed by the senate
(c.h.) court house or county seat
M.O. money order: the date when the office was authorized to issue money orders is often given
N. B. (notice in bulletin) Some mention of the office was made in the postal bulletin,
a publication of the Post Office Departments. These are not in the National Archives
C. post master was later commissioned
Rescinded an order of the post master general establishing or discontinuing a post office
or appointment of a post master, was later rescinded
Ps (papers) when an office was discontinued, the mail for its vicinity would be sent to a nearby office
Special or private office had a special or private source of mail supply
