During the afternoon and evening of Dec. 20th, between 40 and 50 of the neighbors and friends of Mr. and Mrs. PHILIP HOWARD, gave them a happy surprise at their home in Rutland, to congratulate them on their 50th wedding anniversary. The many presents were elaborate and useful. The evening was passed in good social visiting which all seemed to enjoy. The refreshments furnished by the ladies were not lacking in anything that make up a good supper.

OBITUARY - JOHN C. GRAY
At eleven o'clock Sunday night, JOHN C. GRAY, the ice dealer, who was a well-known and respected resident of this city, passed away at his late home, No. 109 Huntington St., after an illness of only a few days. He was 59 years of age. During the forepart of last week he contracted a cold which caused Pneumonia from which he died...he left a wife and seven children to mourn his loss...He was a prominent Mason and that body will attend his funeral which will be held at his late residence at 2:30 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon. The interment will be at the Huntingtonville Cemetery.

JOSEPH MISER, who has been ill with pneumonia for the past 18 days, died at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon at his late residence, No. 11 Water St., at the age of 64. The deceased was an ex-street commissioner and was well known in this city, where he has lived the greater part of his life. CHAS. A. MISER, the proprietor of the Mechanic's Hotel at Factory Square, is a brother of the deceased.

The news of the death of ENOCH L. TODD, an old and honored resident of the town of Rodman, which occurred last week, from catarrhal pneumonia, will be read with sincere sorrow by many people throughout the county. Deceased was the father of MRS. J. F. MOFFETT and MRS. J. R. PAWLING, of this city, and of Miss MAY L. TODD and LEWIS E. TODD of Rodman. These and a devoted wife are the chief mourners.

GOLDEN WEDDING - Mr. and Mrs. B. P. CHEESEMAN, who reside on their farm about three miles from Theresa, celebrated their golden wedding on Monday, Jan. 14. They are the parents of seven children and all were present on this occasion, except one daughter, Mrs. Townsend of Tennessee and one son, DR. HERBERT CHEESEMAN of New York. Quite an unusual occurrence at such gatherings was the fact that four ladies - MRS. M. ELLEN HUNT and MRS. LOUISE ROGERS, of Antwerp, a sister of Mr. Cheeseman and a sister of Mrs. Cheeseman, residing in Theresa, were present at this joyful anniversary, who attended the nuptials of this worthy couple 50 years ago. A bountiful repast was served to the 60 guests present. A large number of handsome articles were presented the aged couple. Mr. and Mrs. Cheeseman are properly classed among the pioneers of Jefferson County, having moved on the farm where they now reside about 49 years ago. ..

At Ashland, MO., Jan. 20, JOSEPH WELLS GRANNIS, age 62 years, 8 months, 17 days The deceased was formerly a resident of this county but for the past 33 years, has been living in the west and south.

MRS. JOHN MORSE of Barnes Corners, died Wednesday night, after severe suffering for some months with a cancer. She leaves a large family and numerous friends to mourn her untimely loss.

The death of ELIJAH KING, age 83 of Richland Township, Guthrie Co., Iowa, occurred Dec. 21, 1888. He was born in Rodman, this county, in 1805 and lived for several years in Antwerp; he went to Wisconsin in 1853, thence passing along farther west into Iowa, residing for a time at Perry in that state. For the last 20 years of his life he had been a helpless invalid, being for the greater part of the time a great sufferer from rheumatism. A wife of 82 years, and two sons survive him.

WEDDING BELLS:
WILLIAM KIMBALL and Miss MINNIE E. RILEY were married by the Rev. Father O'Ryan in St. James Church, Carthage...There was a large number of guests to witness the nuptials...After a bountiful repast the wedding pair departed for a honeymoon visit with relatives in Watertown. They are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Varley and Mr. and Mrs. Jno. Collins and Mrs. McCormack.

A few relatives and friends of the contracting parties assembled at St. Patrick's Church to witness the marriage ceremony which united Miss MINNIE McGOWAN, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. THOMAS McGOWAN, of this city and WILLIAM G. HENRICH, at 7:30 Tuesday morning. Rev. Father Byrne officiated. Miss Kate Wiley was bridesmaid; John Henrich, brother of the groom, was best man. A wedding breakfast was served at the home of the bride's parents, and the young couple left for Montreal on Tuesday, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Peltier. They will on their return take up residence in this city.

SUDDEN DEATH:
About three o'clock Saturday morning, Dr. J. M. Crawe was brought to the door of his residence on Court Street by a vigorous ringing of the bell. He found outside PETER W. NELLIS, age 72, a resident of this city. Nellis was sitting on the steps and suffering great pain. He was assisted into the hall and seated in an arm chair, but before the doctor could do anything for him, he died. An inquest found two organized clots of blood in the heart, which was enlarged and a tissue had formed lining the blood vessels and valves. Heart difficulty was evidently the chief cause of death. Mr. Nellis was a veteran of the late war and drew a pension of $6 per month for rheumatism and heart disease brought on by the service. Joe Spratt Post GAR of which he was a member, took charge of the funeral.

Mrs. JOSEPH SENECAL of Grenadier Island, who is well known to frequenters of the Thousand Islands, has been celebrating the 50th anniversary of her wedding by taking a trip through the New England States. She received her Utica friends at the home of Col. George Young in that city Friday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. JOHN FAILING of Sanford Corners have lived together as man and wife for 70 years. Their ages are respectively 91 and 89 years.

EUGENE COPLEY, a wealthy lumberman, who resides in the village of Antwerp, was found dead in Room No. 18 at the Kirby House in this city on Wednesday morning. He accidentally took an overdose of morphine. He is about 40 years of age and married but has no children. No inquest was held.

OBITUARY:
JOHN N. BEARDSLEY departed this life at age 80, .. on the 2d inst; he was of LaFargeville. He was a respected resident of LaFargeville for 47 years...His wife passed about a year before him. They were blessed with a large family of children, four of whom survive them, two in France, two are in this county, and three had preceded them...The funeral services of the occasion were conducted in the family residence on the 5th inst., by Rev.
