OBITUARY-
Archibald Sternberg, father of Major Abram Sternberg, died at the home of his son-in-law, Henry Witt, near Reynolds Corners, Thursday, Dec. 26 at 84 years. Mr. Sternberg was in apparent good health and spirits an hour before his death. He had been out of doors and coming in remarked that he felt tired and would like down to rest. A short time afterward, his daughter's attention was attracted by his labored breathing. She reached his side only to find that he was passing peacefully away. Before other members of the family could be summoned, he breathed his last... He had been a member of the Masonic fraternity many years and lived in accordance with the principles of the order. His funeral was held Sunday at 12 o'clock in the church at Perch River, and he was buried in the cemetery, nearby, beside his wife. Depauville Lodge F. and A.M. of which the deceased was a member, attended in a body, and many brethren from Clayton were in the ranks. The terrible storm of wind and rain which prevailed during the time of the funeral prevented the full Masonic service at the grave, much to the regret of the brethren, who had assembled to pay the last honors to one of their number. The services at the church were conducted by Rev. E. T. Wade of Stone Mills...Born in the county of Herkimer in 1804, Mr. Sternberg resided in that portion of the state until manhood, teaching in the district school for nine years. Afterward, as a successful farmer, he removed to this county and had since resided here. The church was crowded with friends. The bearers at the funeral were members of Depauville Lodge, of which Mr. Sternberg was a member: John R. Babcock, T. T. Daniels, E. J. Seeber, D. Devendorf, John Howell and John M. Mount.

Mrs. Elizabeth Downer, widow of Avery Downer, died Wednesday, Feb. 19th, of typhoid pneumonia, age 93 years, 4 days. She was born in Vermont and when three years old, moved with her parents, Consider and Ester Mitchell, to Clinton, Oneida Co., NY. She lived in that vicinity until she was 28 years old, when she was married to Avery Downer; she then came to Ellisburgh. Since that time she has lived on the same farm and nearly all of the time in the same house till the fall of 1888, when she broke up housekeeping. She was remarkable for her powers of endurance, doing all her own work and taking care of her house until after she was 90 years old. She was ever ready to help care for the sick, going in her younger days to Belleville, Woodville and Rural Hill to watch with those who needed care. She kept up her list of correspondents to the last and was always glad to see her friends. Her fine memory and readiness made her entertaining in conversation. She was ready and willing to go, saying that she could scarcely wait to see what it was like on the other side. She will be missed by a large circle of friends.

The Late Lyman Ackerman-
Mr. Ackerman was born on the farm on which he has always resided. His father was Asa Ackerman, one of the county's pioneers. Deceased has one brother living, Ezra Ackerman of Eastonville, Mich., and two sisters, one of whom is Mrs. Rev. H. M. Church of Masena Springs. The other sister resides in California. He leaves a wife and three children: Willard Ackerman of E. Hounsfield, Mrs. A. D. Van Allen of Exeter, and Miss Carrie E. Ackerman of Pillar Point. He has always been an enterprising farmer. His influence was greatest among his neighbors, which is one of the best compliments that can be given to any man. In his death the fishermen and farmers of the south part of the county have lost a faithful and useful leader, and many people throughout the county are deprived of a good friend. The funeral was held from his late residence on Pillar Point, on Friday at 10:30 a.m., Rev. Mr. Hoag of the M. E. Church officiating.
