Lyme, Jefferson Co., NY

In the matter of the estate of JOHN A. WELLS of Lyme, Jefferson Co., NY:

On 30 January 1874, CHRISTOPHER GETMAN of Lyme, Jefferson Co., petitioned to open probate on the estate. In the petition he stated the following regarding heirs/next of kin of John A. Wells:

"Your petitioner further shows that the said deceased left no next of kin or heirs at law to the best of his knowledge and belief. Your petitioner further states that he was well acquainted with the said testator for the last 25 years and that he came to the County of Jefferson from the state of Vermont - that testator has often told your petitioner that he was an illegitimate son - that all he knew about his father was from a letter he had from his mother, BETSEY FLINT, in the year 1847 which letters is now in the possession of the petitioner and further that testator has told petitioner that his said mother was dead - and your petitioner has no knowledge or information in regard to said mother other than as above noted, or of any relatives or next of kin or heirs at law of said testator - said testator was never married."


JOHN A. WELLS at the age of 50 years, named MARTHA MORGAN of Worth, Jefferson Co. He named WILLIAM DILLENBECK. He named NEWAL JENKS of Mansville. He named CHARLES HORTON of Watertown or Pamelia. He named CHARITY B. HUNT or her husband, JAMES D. HUNT. He left a bequest to the Moris Tract burial ground, which was enough to build a post and board fence and paint. He named three persons to carry out this request: PETER SMITH, CHRISTOPHER GETMAN and WILLIAM LEE. He appointed PETER SMITH and CHRISTOPHER GETMAN and WILLIAM LEE as co-executors of his estate.
