On 25 October 1848, FRANCIS J. BURT of Hounsfield petitioned to open probate and stated that Samuel had appointed him one of the executors of the will.

WILL OF SAMUEL GUTHRIE
SAMUEL GUTHRIE named his son, ALFRED, who was to receive all of his books except his account book. Named his grandson, EDWIN CHAMBERLAIN, son of his daughter, HARRIET CHAMBERLAIN. Edwin to receive half of a lot that had been deeded to Samuel by EDWIN GUTHRIE, deceased, and by Samuel to HARRIET CHAMBERLAIN in 1846. He appointed Harriet Chamberlain as trustee to take charge of the legacy. Named ADELINE GUTHRIE, widow of his son, EDWIN GUTHRIE, and her son, SOUTHWICK GUTHRIE property in or near Port Madison, Iowa. Named his daughter, CYNTHIA BURT. He appointed CYNTHIA BURT with her husband, FRANCIS BURT, as executors of the will. Will dated 15 October 1848. /s/ Samuel Guthrie
